Bronze medals for Looney and Hehir

The Woodies DIY Athletics Association of Ireland Inter Counties Cross Country Championships plus the juvenile even ages from U-12 to U-18 were held in Tatterstalls, Ratoath, County Meath last week.

Clare athletes produced outstanding performances, with Eoin Looney (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) in the boys’ U-14 3,000m winning an individual bronze medal in very tough underfoot conditions with (Ennis Track) taking the team gold and Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare taking the team bronze medals in the same age group and Clare taking the gold medals.

In the girls U-14 Clare won bronze medals with Munster winning the Inter Region with the help of two Clare athletes, Aisling Kelly (sixth) and Caoimhie Harvey (11th) both (St John’s).

Kevin Mulcaire (Ennis Track) finished fourth in the boys’ U-16 4,000m, Sean Collins (Ennis Track) was 10th and they helped Munster win the regional title.  Also on the Munster team, Imogen Cotter (Ennis Track) finished 14th in the junior ladies’ 4,000m and led Clare to bronze medals.

The big race of the day was the senior men’s 10,000m and Sean Hehir (Kilkishen) and Clare finishing in his highest cross country position, third overall, and led Clare to bronze medals.

Barbara Cleary (Miltown Malbay), running with Clare and Donore Harriers, was competing in her first national cross country championships and she came home in 13th position, with Clare finishing fifth.
