Big win for Clooney-Quin

Clooney-Quin 1-11
Wolfe Tones 1-5

Clooney-Quin ran out eventual winners in this second round tie in Newmarket on Sunday afternoon. Both teams went into the game having lost their opening match and knowing that a win was vital to keep their championship hopes alive.

Clooney-Quin had the upper hand for the opening 10 minutes, Deirdre Murphy, Aisling Corbett and Claire Ryan registering four points. With Wolfe Tones starting to come into the game, Laura Linnane pulled a point back for the Shannon side in the 11th minute.

Clooney-Quin’s goal followed two minutes later when Murphy sent a long range free to the square, which deceived a crowded Wolfe Tones goal line and dipped under the bar to give Clooney-Quin a 1-5 to 0-2 advantage.

The rest of that opening period was played out predominantly in the middle of the field, with both sets of defenders working hard to keep the danger areas clear leaving Clooney ahead 1-6 to 0-3 at half time.

Murphy converted two points on the restart before Linnane pulled one back for Wolfe Tones. Linnane was to the fore for the Tones’ goal, with a well-placed long range free into the square which Dawn Ryan finished to the Clooney net to reduce the deficit to three points with 10 minutes gone in the second half.

Wolfe Tones battled hard for the remainder of the match but despite the best efforts of Evelyn McGurl and Rachel O’Brien up front they could not grab the scores they needed, while at the other end Murphy slotted home three more points for Clooney-Quin to see them run out winners.
