THE East Clare National Schools Cross Country Championships held in the Lees Road Sports Complex with over 1000 children taking part in beautiful weather conditions.
There were some great contests and the titles were evenly distributed.

Young Clare athletes prepare for national championships

THE National Juvenile Indoor Track and Field Championships for U-12s to U-19s and will take place at the new indoor arena in Athlone this Saturday and Sunday at 10am both days.

There will be local athletes in the U-15 1,000m walk – Angharad Loughnane (Marian) and in the girls’ U-17 1,500m walk where Shannon O’Grady and Gearóid McMahon (both Shannon) will compete in the 1,000m walk at 5.15pm.

In the girls’ U-12 60m, Niamh Conlon (Kilmihil) will compete with Susan Nestor (St Mary’s) in the 600m, while, in the boys’ U-12 60m, Ben Whelehan (Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare) will be competing in the 600m with Conor Blake (St John’s) in the high jump.

In the girls’ U-13s, Laura Greene (St John’s) will be in the high jump, while in the boys’ U-13 James McGuire (Ennis Track) will be in the 600m.

In the boys’ U-14 Tony Odubuto (Ennis Track) will compete in the 60m, 60m hurdles and long jump, Caoilfhionn O’Dea (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) in the boys’ U-14 800m with Alex O’Neill (St Cronan’s) the Munster U-14 800m champion also taking part.

In the girls’ U-15 800m, two Clare athletes, Caoimhe Harvey (St John’s) and Elaine Shannon (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) will compete with Kate Taylor (St Cronan’s) and Anna Courtney (Marian) in the girls’ U-15 long jump.

In the U-17 girls’, Derbhile Ryan (Clonlara and Nenagh AC) will be in the high jump along with Rachel Clancy (St John’s), with Ronan Barry (Marian) in the boys’ U-17 high jump.

Derbhile will also be competing in the long jump and shot putt, with Noah McMahon (Ennis Track) in the 800m. Kaderi Kadrumu (Ennis Track) will be competing in the boys’ U-17 long jump.

Róisín Considine (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare), Muireann O’Shea (Marian) and Laura Power (Ennis Track) will contest the girls’ U-18 800m finals. On Saturday, Laura Power (Ennis Track) will contest the 1,500m finals with Jessica O’Connor (Marian) in the high jump, Shane McGrath (Shannon) (long jump), Seamus McMahon (Shannon) (shot putt) with Ollie Gleeson (Ennis Track) in the 60m hurdles on Sunday.

The big medal contender will be in the girls’ U-19 where Niamh Markham (Ennis Track), Munster champion at 400m will also be contesting the 1,500m along with Jean Clancy (St John’s). Niamh will be in the 800m with Ian Slobody (Kilmihil) in the boys’ U-19 800m, Emer Hillery (Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare) in the girls’ U-19 200m and high jump. Karl Fitzmaurice (Shannon) 1,500m and Conor Foley-Ellis (Kilmihil) in the 60m hurdles and shot putt.

Trip to Tipp for Munster road championships

THE Munster Athletics Association Masters Road Championships will take place this Sunday in Moyglass, County Tipperary.

The first race will be the masters’ ladies’ (four miles) at 1pm and that will be followed by the masters’ men’s (four miles) at 1.30pm.

Clare will be fielding four teams, O-35 men and ladies, O-45 ladies and O-50 men. Amongst the Clare clubs taking part will be Ennis Track, BMOH, Kilmurry-Ibrickane/North Clare with Ennis Track Ladies’ and Men’s teams O-35s starting as favourites to take the Munster titles.
