Best athlete award for Elaine Shannon


The fourth annual Tommy White Memorial and the 37th Moy Open sports were held in Moy football field and the bright sunshine ensured a huge crowd of athletes and spectators.

The 3,000m was the first race of the day and Julio Cesear F Castro (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) and his clubmate Willie Devitt made the early running. Castro stamped his authority on this race with three laps remaining to take the Michael White Memorial Shield that was presented to him by Michael’s wife, Ann in second place was Willie Devitt followed by Thomas Garrahy (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) with Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare taking the team title.

The ladies’ 3,000m was a great race with Marian Burke (St Mary’s) and Michelle O’Mahoney and Elaine Shannon (both Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) the early leaders. Michelle O’Mahoney took over the lead with two laps remaining and held on to take the title and the Tommy White Memorial Shield. This trophy was also presented by Ann White.

Last year’s title-holder Marian Burke was in second spot ahead of Elaine Shannon with Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare A taking the team title ahead of the B team.

The Michael White Memorial Trophy for the best overall athlete went to Elaine Shannon (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare), who captured the girls’ U-14 100m, was second in the 600m and third in the 3,000m.

In the married ladies’ 100m, Mary Considine (Cree) again retained the title ahead of sister Sheila O’Dea (Cooraclare), with Marian Burke (St Mary’s) in third spot.

The senior men’s 100m was won by Liam Shannon (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) ahead of Pat Healy (Marian) and Garry Shannon (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare).

In the senior men’s shot putt, 16 competitors took part and the title went to Tommy Greene (St John’s) with a throw of 10.43m. In second place was Gordon Kelly Miltown Malbay GAA (9.15m) and third was Brendan Rouine, (Moy, 8.95m). Greene also captured the 56lbs for distance with a throw of 5.63m ahead of Martin Fitzpatrick (St Mary’s, 5.14m) and Brendan McMahon (Moy, 4.62m).

10k wins for Colleran and Shannon

The first Kilmurry-Sixmilebridge 10k road race and 5k fun walk was held in very hot conditions.

Over the first kilometre, two athletes made an early break, Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy) and Julio Cesar F Castro (Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare) and they started to open up a good lead on Eoin Durkin (Donore Harriers) as they went through the 2k mark in 6.12.

Donnacha O’Mahoney (East Cork) had moved into fourth place as the leaders were going through the 3k in 9.24. Veronica Colleran (Ennis Track) was in the top six alongside Richie O’Donnell (BMOH) and Ray Scanlon (Ennis Track).

Shannon and Castro were running shoulder to shoulder at the 5k mark when the time was 16.02. They were still together at the 7k mark.

Going towards the 8k, Michael Shannon began to stamp his authority on the race and the Kilnaboy man produced a very good final two kilometres to come home a comfortable winner in 32.32. Castro took second in 33.09 with Eoin Durkin running very well to hold onto third in 36.37 from the fast-finishing Donnacha O’Mahoney (East Cork, 36.51).

In the ladies’ race, Veronica Colleran set the early pace, running in the top six with the men and going through the first kilometre in 3.54 with Breda Lynch (Dooneen AC) just a few metres adrift along with Tracy Guilfoyle (Kilnaboy) and Eimear Power (Sportsworld).

Colleran went through the half-way point in 19.30 and she crossed the finish line in fifth place overall with a time of 38.48, with a very big race from Tracy Guilfoyle to finish seventh overall in 40.00.
Breda Lynch was third in the ladies’ race in 40.23 followed by Eimear Power in 40.58 .
