THE children of Barefield National School welcomed the spring in style with their now traditional annual concert. Pupils took to the stage at Glór to perform a feast of fun, drama, singing, music and dance.
The annual show has been staged in Glór for the past six years, but the school has been hosting the concert for over 30 years. Teacher Peadar McMahon along with fellow teacher Aisling Daly were involved in putting the show together.
“The shows started off being held at Christmas and then it was decided to have an annual spring event, all of the children really look forward to being involved,” Peadar said.
More than 250 pupils were involved in this year’s showcase. “All of them did really, really well. When it came to putting the show together it was really up to the teachers and the students to come up with the ideas, there was everything from fairy tales to music, and little plays. There was also music from our marching band and the school choir.”
As usual the show proved popular with the audience, selling out the Glór venue. “We had a packed auditorium, over 500 people were there and they really appreciated the hard work the children put in and they all really enjoyed it.”
According to Peadar, the show creates a real buzz around the school. “The kids love getting involved, they were rehearsing for three weeks in school and then they had a chance to take to the stage in Glór for a rehearsal too. They all got a change to go on stage before the big night which was great. Taking part in this show is great for building confidence, performing on a big stage like that. And of course it isn’t just the kids who are involved, the parents really go to a lot of trouble making the costumes and it’s really appreciated.”
Funds raised from the show will go towards the school’s facilities. “We recently opened our new school which is fantastic and we’ve been fundraising a lot for that. The money raised through this show will be used to buy new IT equipment for the children,” said Peadar.
