Ballyea earn first league points

Ballyea 3-21   Smith O’Briens 0-15

Fresh from their great U-21A championship win, Ballyea produced an impressive performance on Sunday evening when recording their first win of the Division 1B campaign.

They struggled to get control of the tie and trained by four points, 0-6 to 0-10, at half time. In the opening minutes of the second half they dominated the exchanges and goals from Eanna McInerney (2) and Gearóid O’Connell saw them take control on a day when Tony Kelly contributed 0-10.

The switch of James Murphy and Gearóid O’Connell from the full forward line to midfield in the second half played a big part in this victory on a day when Murphy (3) Jack Browne (2) Niall Keane (2) Francie Nealon (2) Brian Murphy and Gearóid O’Connell (1 each) added points.

In fairness to the Killaloe side, it has to be said that their play was disrupted by injuries to key players. They lost half-backs Seamus Gleeson and Micheál Ryan early in the game and this had an unsettling effect on the team while Keith Stritch picked up an injury in the final minute at a time when they had used their full complement of substitutes.
