Photograph by John KellyTONY award-winning actress Marie Mullen will officially open the All-Ireland One Act Drama Finals when it comes to Ennis this December. The Ennis Players have won the honour of hosting this prestigious event in the county town from December 2 to December 4.
The finals, run under the auspices of the Drama League of Ireland (DLI) and the Amateur Drama Council of Ireland (ADCI), will be held at Glór. This will be a welcome return for the event to the Banner County, previously hosted by Ennis in 2003.
“Ennis Players won this prestigious event in 2001 and 2004 and a warm welcome will be extended to the 12 competing one-act plays and groups from all over Ireland,” said Jackie Scanlan, PRO for the Ennis Players.
Over 50 groups are currently in the throes of competing at the 21 qualifying festivals throughout the country from Rossmore in West Cork to Bangor and Ards in County Down. Twelve groups will qualify for the finals and along with their supporters will draw over 1000 people to the county town.
The adjudicator at this year’s finals is the renowned Anna Walker from Dublin. An accomplished actress and director, Anna will be bringing her expert analysis to the Glór stage at each of the five sessions over the weekend. The sessions are on Friday evening, December 2, Saturday afternoon and evening, December 3 and Sunday afternoon and evening at which the final adjudication, presentation of awards and closing gala will take place. The opening and closing ceremonies will contain much drama and surprises.
The festival is delighted to have obtained support from a number of local individuals and businesses.
“The All-Ireland finals will be a welcome boost to the local economy and traditionally has been a start to the Christmas shopping activities for most of our visiting delegates. Ennis Players are delighted to have secured special hotel and accommodation rates for the weekend together with pre-theatre discount menus with a number of the town’s fine restaurants,” he added.
“Ennis Players have struck gold with obtaining the services of one of Ireland’s leading actresses, Marie Mullen, who will officially open the finals weekend. Tony award-winning, Marie is an icon amongst the drama community throughout Ireland and her presence will get the finals off to a tremendous start,” Mr Scanlan concluded.
The committee has also commissioned West Clare’s prominent artist Krystyna Pomeroy to design the special awards at the finals. Contact Glór theatre at 065 6843103 for details of ticket prices.
