Division 1B

O’Callaghan’s Mills 2-17   Scariff 1-9

O’CALLAGHAN’S Mills continued their impressive start to the season when extending their unbeaten run with a comfortable win over Scariff in Division 1B at Hamilton Memorial Park in Kilkishen on Saturday afternoon.

An impressive start that saw them take an eight-point lead, 1-5 to 0-0, after seven minutes set up this latest victory. The second quarter was more evenly contested, suggesting Scariff would make matters difficult for the winners in the second half.

Having played with the aid of the breeze in the first half, they were nine points clear at half-time,
1-11 to 0-5. Inter-county man Conor ‘Rocky’ Cooney contributed 1-3 of that tally.

Scariff made a bright start to the second half, outscoring their opponents 0-4 to 0-1 in the opening 10 minutes. However, they failed to maintain this and only managed one further score, a goal from Ross Horan after a Conor McNamara 20m free had been parried, three minutes from the end.

In between, the winners hit 1-2, the goal coming from Jonathon Lyons with six minutes remaining.
The winners closed out the game with points from Aidan O’Gorman, Conor Cooney and Clare captain, Pat Donnellan.

Adrian Donovan, Pat Donnellan and Conor ‘Rocky’ Cooney were always prominent for the winners. Michael Scanlan stood out for Scariff, for whom Pádraic Brody, Darragh Kelly and Alphie Rodgers also did well.

The home side played with the aid of the breeze in the first half when the crucial score was their goal, which came with four minutes remaining to the break. Ruan played with the aid of the breeze in the first half and led by eight points at half-time, 1-11 to 0-6, the goal coming from Aidan Lynch.

They continued to hold the upperhand in the third quarter but when Whitegate switched All-Star Brendan Bugler from defence to the forward line, the East Clare side got the upperhand.

Bugler regularly won possession from goalkeeper Andrew Fahy’s huge puckouts and this led to the vital scores.

Six minutes from time, goalkeeper Fahy drilled a 25m free to the Ruan net to cut the deficit to three. They piled on the pressure and took the lead as the game entered injury time. Ruan fought back and Michael Vaughan hit the equaliser three minutes into injury time.

The Doora-Barefield outfit led from the start and had two points on the board, courtesy of Alan O’Neill, inside the opening five minutes.

Ivor Whyte added two from play after good work by Gary Hassett and Mark Hanrahan, before O’Neill added two more to make it 0-6 to 0-0 after 10 minutes. Ballyea got on the scoreboard with two pointed frees by David Sheehan, which were separated by like scores from Leo Duggan and Whyte.

St Joseph’s lead was 0-9 to 0-4 after O’Neill pointed a further free and Ballyea added points from a Sheehan free and a Paddy O’Connell effort from play. Six minutes from the break, O’Neill’s powerful overhead strike found the Ballyea net and he went on to add two points to leave the half-time score at 1-11 to 0-5 in his side’s favour.

The second half was just two minutes old when Alan Duggan struck for his side’s second goal and this left Ballyea with a mountain to climb.
