Another championship title for Burren club

The Munster Tug-of-war Championships were held at Conna, hosted by the Connabride Vintage Club, last Sunday, where a very large number of teams competed in what was a horribly bad day.

The 11 clubs that competed were Donoughmore, Glenhill, Harps, Burren, Shop, Farrenreigh, Cuan Rithe, Araglen, Mill, Inchnapough and Castlegregory.

Harps A and B were the only competitors in the U-18 and U-23 competitions.

The 635kg novice/senior attracted seven teams, Cuan Rithe, Farrenreigh, Araglin, Burren, Glenhill, Shop, and Donoughmore and after the round-robin system, the top four teams to reach the semi-finals were the Burren on 18, Shop on 10, Donoughmore on nine and Glenhill on seven.

It was Shop v Donoughmore in the semi-final, where the Shop took this in two straight ends, while, in the other semi-final Burren defeated Glenhill, also in straight ends.

The Burren added to their winnings when capturing the final in two straight ends and they were presented with the Barry Bros Perpetual Cup.

The 680kg novice/senior was the last competition of the day and 11 teams, including Clare’s Burren, competed in this event.

This was divided into two groups of six and five and after some great pulling, the top two teams from each group were the Burren on 15 and the Mill on 12 in Group 1 and the Shop on 12 and Araglin on nine in Group 2.

In the first semi-final, Burren were too strong for Araglin while the Shop accounted for the Mill in the other semi-final.

In the final, the Shop proved too strong for the Clare club.
