Afloat for 70 years

All in at the Ennis Swimming and Lifesaving Club Invitational Gala at Ennis Pool. Photograph by John KellyFRIDAY evening and Saturday last saw a festival of swimming at Ennis Leisure Complex as Ennis Swimming and Lifesaving Club celebrated 70 years afloat with their annual invitation gala.
Ennis Swimming and Lifesaving Club is and has always been run on an entirely voluntary basis. The club has been actively involved since its beginning with the development and progression of swimming in Ennis and the county. In its early years, members of the club were the driving force behind the building of the original Ennis pool, which was officially opened in October 1969 and again in the late 1990s and early 2000s in its redevelopment to form Ennis Leisure Complex.
Swimmers from Waterford, Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, Fermoy, Mallow, Limerick, Askeaton and Ennis arrived for the annual invitation gala. A total of 140 swimmers competed over the two-day period.
The standard of swimming was very high, with Bernard Cahill, Ennis Swim Club, achieving a Munster record in the 400 individual medley event. Bernard and 15 other swimmers from Ennis used this home event as a preparation run for the Irish Olympic Trials, being held this week in the National Aquatic Centre.
The best overall swimmers of the meet were Ennis’ Lily Barrett and Rory McEvoy who won the John and Nora Murphy Perpetual Cups for 2012. Lily stormed to victory, winning seven of her eight events. She swam best times in most of her events and showed the opposition her high level of fitness and skill. Rory McEvoy won six gold medals, winning all his entered events. Rory also swam 59 seconds for his 100m front crawl, which is a huge achievement for the 13-year-old.
Other notable performances came from Róisín Cahill and Dylan Barrett who each won five gold medals in their respective age groups.
Throughout the competition, Ennis swimmers achieved personal best times and achieved qualifying standards for summer national competitions.
