Adult Learning in North Clare has undergone a massive sea change in the past year.
This was very evident last Thursday evening in Ennistymon, where adult learners received FETAC certificates for their studies.
Students received their awards for Clare VEC Adult Education Service programmes they completed over the past 12 months.
“An unusual aspect to the celebration was that more men than women participated in the event.
“Usually, it’s adults supporting children in learning but in another nice twist to the tale, some learners were supported by their children at the event,” said Ann Knox, community education facilitator, Clare VEC Adult and Community Education Service.
More than 90 learners had earned FETAC certificates in IT, internet, horticulture, cookery, communications, music appreciation, visual arts practice and crafts.
“While great credit is due to the learners, many of whom are progressing to new topics or new levels this year, the use of Liscannor school, the Vocational school and Ennistymon Library made it possible to learn locally,” Ms Knox added.
“The provision of learning in the community is only possible where local people are actively involved. In North Clare, Gerry McDonagh, CLDC and local farmer and IFA member, Peter Davenport, EC Adult Education Service is identifying the local learning needs and negotiating access to local venues,” she added.
Other adult courses planned for North Clare include level five FETAC leisure and recreation based in the Burren Outdoor Centre, a FETAC DIY course based in Miltown and an introduction to catering course based in Ennistymon.
Each of these courses are funded by the Labour Market Activation Fund.
“In an age where lifelong learning is not only promoted but is essential, North Clare is once again showing the way forward,” Ms Knox concluded.
