Adrian lands captain’s prize at Lahinch

There was a huge entry for the Lahinch captain’s (Richard Pyne) prize on Friday and Saturday, from which the leading players qualified for a play-off on Sunday. The winner with 63 points was Adrian Kirby, from Peter Fitzgerald, who had a similar score, as had third-placed Niall O’Mahony. They were followed by Domhnall O’Mahony, Brendan O’Doherty, Peter Hennessy, Sean Scanlan, John Feighan and Jim Byrne. Diarmuid Leonard won the gross with 54 points from Eddie Power.
Eoin Doohan had the best gross on Friday with Colm Abernethy winning this category on Saturday. In the seniors’ section on the Castle course, Paddy O’Neill was the winner from Des Fitzgerald.
On Friday, William Burke Junior won from Brendan Caffrey with Michael Considine in third spot followed by TJ Kerins.
Saturday’s winner was Peter Cronin from Frank O’Hare with Billy Burke in third spot followed by Michael Whelan.
The winner of the front nine on Friday was Tom Hyland with Gerry Sadlier winning the category on Saturday. Liam Duggan won the second nine on Friday and David Grennell won the second nine on Saturday.
Other prizewinners were Aaron McNulty (Junior) and John Power (past captain).
Michael Gibson had a hole-in-one at the eighth on Saturday when John Wood had a similar achievement at the eleventh.
The ladies’ fourball for the Kilcreene Cup was played at Lahinch last Thursday on the championship course. The winners with 40 points were Gráinne Hennessy (16) and Jean Basheer (18) from Barbara McEvoy (14) and Pat Ramsey (22) with 39 points. In third spot, also with 39 points, were Evelyn Lyons (22) and Eileen Corry (28). The gross was won by Gráinne D’Alton (5) and Jenny Cagney (14) with 32 points.
In a ladies’ fourball Stableford on the Castle Course on the same day the winners with 41 points were Mary Meany (25) and Mairéad Greene (32).
The men’s fourball competition for the Dr Browne Cup was won by Mike Ryan (14) and Ger McMahon (8) with 40 points on Thursday. Leonard (6) and Sean Shanahan (12) were second with a similar score.
The winners of the men’s fourball on the Castle Course on the same day were: Sean Murphy (14) and Des Fitzgerald (21) with 42 points.
Saturday’s invitational ladies’ fourball on the Castle Course was won by Mary Arthur (18) and Liz Blake (18) with 41 points  from Gráinne Hennessy (16) and Ann Morrissey (29) on 39 points. In third spot were Miriam O’Keeffe (13) and Una Cronin (20) and they were followed by Jean Basheer (18) and Gertie McGrath (23) and they also had 39 points. The gross was won by Rose and Linda Doyle with 27 points.
The competition on Sunday was the Residents’ Cup, a men’s fourball Stableford competition on the Castle Course. The winners with 45 points were David (2) and Barry Conway (10) from Eugene Judge (8) and Ger Shanahan (15), who had a similar score. In third spot with 44 points were Gary (5) and Eric Lavelle (16) and they were followed by Martin O’Sullivan (15) and Aidan Spooner (16), who also returned 44 points.
The Knox Cup, a ladies’ singles v par competition, was played for on the championship course, where the winner with five up was Angela Cullinan (13) from
Fiona McCarthy (17) with four up. Una Cronin (20) was third with two up while the gross was won by Eileen Rose Power with a level score.
In the silver division, Rose Doyle (11) won with one up from Valerie Shannon (7) and Olivia Lucas (10) and they also had a score of one up.
The bronze division was won by Suzanne Hassett (28) with two up from Mary McCarthy (35) on one up and Marie Nolan (26) on one up.

Kilkee

The open singles held at Kilkee last Thursday was won by former Shannon rugby club player Sean Moynihan, with a score of 43 points playing off a handicap of 16. In second place was another sports star, Tony Nation, holder of two All-Ireland senior football medals with Cork. Tony had 41 points on the day, playing of a handicap of 11. In third place was Tony Frawley (16) with 39 points.
The club’s foursomes matchplay competition was run off over the last week of July. The entry was the largest in recent years. In keeping with the club’s strong family atmosphere, many pairs were made up of father-son combinations. In fact, three of the four semi-finalists were father and sons. The first semi-final saw Ciaran and Seamus Woods up against Mike and Leonard Mullane. The Mullane pair proved stronger on the day and won on the 17th. The second semi-final involved captain Pat Cronin and his son Kevin up against Eddie Clohessy and Mike Williams, both members of Shannon. The Shannon pair won by 2 and 1. The final was played to a very high standard but Eddie Clohessy and Mike Williams proved too strong and won on the 17th hole.
The bank holiday weekend competition was a team of four and the winning score was 108 points. The winning team was made up of Mike Mullane, Mike Ryan, Timmy King and Pat Sheahan. All four are members of the Limerick-based Bandits Golf Society. In second place was the team made up of Pat and Barry Harte, Derek Garvey and John Keane. In third place were Sean Moynihan, Mike Benson, Ger Hackett and Liam Browne.
The ladies’ open day competition last Thursday was won by Kilkee’s Ita Mangan (19) with 41 points from Mary O’Mahony, Castletroy, who had a similar score. Deridre Purcell Castletroy (24) was third with 39 points followed by Mary Kennedy, Limerick (27) with 38 points, Aileen McNamara (Rathbane), 28 with 38 points. Maura Seymour, Rathbane (6) won the gross with 30 points.
The category prize was won by Caroline Harrington, Kilkee (36) with 43 points.
In the Georges Head Cup competition the winners were Elma O’Donoghue and Ann Fox from Eimear Nation and Niamh Kelly.

Ennis

Ennis seniors held a modified fourball last Thursday, with the first six pairs all finishing on 38 points. They were Jimmy Kerins and Terry Hughes, Pat Cahill and Tom Pilkington, Luke Coote and Michael Cummins, Pat O’Reilly and Ollie Kenneally, John Normoyle and Jim Felle, Dick Herbert and Peadar Cosgrove. In seventh place, a point behind, were Brian Higgins and Paul Mockler.
The winner of the ladies’ monthly medal was Kitty Morris in the silver division with 70 from Geraldine O’Mahoney with 72. The bronze division was won by Cora Kerins with 67 from Aideen Considine on 71.
Last week’s ladies’ seniors competition was won by Bridget Hoey, Carmel Verling, Oonagh Fitzpatrick and Nuala Guinan on 62 points.
Saturday’s open singles at Ennis was won by Tony McInerney with 44 points from Paul Sherlock on 42 and Niall Howard on 42.
The team-of-four event on Sunday was won by Noel O’Connor, Ian Myatt, Sean Myatt and David O Connor with 99 points from Luke Coote, Tim McAllister, Paul Higgins and Colm Higgins on a similar score. In third spot with 95 points were: John Cullinane, Pat McCarthy, Eddie Glenny and John McNamara. The prize for nearest the pin at the seventh was won by Michael Neylon while the nearest the pin prize on the eighth (second shot) was won by Tony Kinnevane.
The winners of the open fourball on Monday were John Fitzpatrick and David O’Halloran with 47 points from Tommy Stack and Gerry O’Connor on 44 points with third spot filled by Pat Murphy and Ronnie Guinnane on 44 points.
The winners of the three-ball modified rumble were Noreen Doohan, Nancy Burke and Derry Nalty with 57 points followed by John Dempsey, Pat McInerney and Jim Casey with 55 points. In third spot were Jason Woods, Paschal Phelan and Andrew Whelan with 53 points followed by Mary Sadlier, Áine Keane and Liam McInerney with 53 points.

Woodstock

The captain’s (Eugene Quinn) prize was played for at Woodstock at the weekend when Michael O’Brien (16) emerged as the winner with a score of 100. He had half a shot to spare from Michael P O’Brien (15) with Adrian Kearney (9) in third spot with 100.5 followed by David McCarthy (15) with 101.5.
Eoghan O’Loughlin (4) won the gross with 70 while the category winners were: Paul Coote (12) with 103, Alan Garrihy (13) with 102.5 and Brendan Keogh (19) with 103.5.
Other prize winners were John O’Connor (11) (past captain) with 71 points, Jim McMahon (seniors) with 66 points and Vincent Neylon (13) (Guests) with 39 points.
In the junior section, Ross McCarthy (13) won category one with 43 points, Rory Brennan (28) won category two with 41 points while Jack Colleran (36) won category 3 with 41 points.
The captain’s prize to the ladies was won by Mary Sadlier with 41 points from Nancy Burke with a similar score. In third spot was Liz Dinan with 36 points followed by Kathleen McEnery with 35 points. The gross was won by Ann Gillan. The nines were won by Maura Umlawski and Una Patton.
The captain’s fourball was won by Áine Burke and Mary Gleeson with 41 points from Liz Dinan and Fran Feighery with 39 points.
The Eileen Murphy foursomes will be played for this Saturday.
Last week’s open singles was won by Pat O’Donoghue (17) with 45 points from Tom Brennan (15) Castlcomer with 43 points and Thomas Hehir (9) with 43 points.
The draw for the Woodstock Cup will take place on Friday night.
The Spancilhill Shield will be played at East Clare on August 14. The format is fourball betterball and the timesheet is now open.

Portumna

The Portumna captain’s (Christy O’Rourke’s) prize  was played for on Saturday and Sunday and the winner was Stephen Madden (23) with 102.5. In second place was Enda Quigley (20) with 105 nett followed by David Burke (13) 105.5 nett, Mick Keyes (12) 106 nett, Dave Burnett (18) 107.9 nett and John O Donnell (12) 107.
The gross was won by Ger Lynch (6) with 117 from Mike Flanagan (9) with 121.
The leading qualifier was Cathal McIntyre (12) with 66 nett while the past captains’ winner was Pete Gibbs (12) with 111 nett. The seniors prize was won by Joe McCormack (21) with 109.5, the longest drive by Pat Quinlan and the visitors’ prize by Marie Cahill (13) with 40 points.
The lady captains’ competition for the men runs until Friday, August 12.
Lillian Austin’s ladies’ captain’s prize is on Saturday, August 13. 
This week until Saturday there will be an open three-ball (any combination).
The Rumble for Crumlin will start from Monday, August 8 and will continue for the month of August. 
Portumna are hosting a open men’s and ladies’ left-handed competition on Friday, August 12. A quarter of the members are left-handed players and these include the captain, Christy O’Rourke; president, John Harte; vice-captain, Frank Ryan; treasurer, Joe Austin; course manager, Paddy Kelly and office manager Mike Ryan.

Spanish Point

This week, the girls’ home internationals, in which Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales play each other in foursomes and singles over three days, is taking place in Gullane in Scotland and all club members are keeping a watch on the results. Included in the Irish team is Spanish Point girl Sinéad Sexton and she is wished well by all the members.
Last Sunday evening the club hosted a visit from Anthony Daly, his management team and the Dublin hurling panel, who were staying in Doonbeg for the weekend, as they prepare for their All Ireland semi-final against Tipperary. They played the course in scramble format and enjoyed a barbecue afterwards, which was organised and prepared by the men’s committee.
The seniors’ open last week was won by Gerry Meade (16) with 37 points from Willie McNamara (16) with 36 points.
The winner of the Thursday open was David Downes (27) with 39 points from Michael Shields (12) with 36 points and Paul Downes (23) with 36 points. Friday’s team-of-four scramble winners were Jim Marrinan (17), Pat O’Malley (16), Kevin Kyne (28) and David Downes (27) with seven under gross.
The weekend’s singles golfer of the year competition was won by Martin O’Gorman (20) with 36 points from Cathal Whelan (5) with 35 points, Pat Lorrigan (16) with 35 points, Sean McMahon (11) with 35 points and Dermot Waldron (20) with 35 points.
The captain’s (Michael Hennessy) prize will be played for on Saturday and Sunday week, August 13 and 14 and a timesheet is available in the clubhouse.

Shannon

The ladies’ 18-hole stroke competition at Shannon saw Ann Gordon make a return to the winner’s podium when she returned 69 nett. Ann had one shot to spare from Yoka Walsh. The back nine was required to separate Helen O’Donnell and Maura Mulcahy while the gross was won by Rose Doyle with 82.
In the men’s open singles, 43 points proved to be a popular score, with the top three all returning that amount with Maurice O’Connor edging out Des Elliott and Michael Allen. Maurice returned 20 points for his opening nine but laid the foundation for victory by covering the back nine in two over for 23 points, highlighted by a birdie at the 11th. In second place was Des Elliott who returned nines of 21 and 22 and Michael Allen was third with nines of 23 and 20. The gross was won by Ed Hickey with a two-under round of 38 points.
The primary bank holiday weekend competition was an open team-of-four, which saw a quartet of Maurice Murphy, Denis O’Gorman, Dermot Murphy and Eamon Fanneran capture the spoils with 98 points, just edging out John McPhillips, Brian Sherlock, Tony McNamara and John Kelly by virtue of a better back nine.
In the open singles on Monday the top three all returned 42 points and they are Paul O’Halloran, Mal Roberts and John O’Connell. Then came a trio on 41 points, visitor David Constable from East Clare, Peter Hegarty and Eamon Fanneran. The gross was again won by Ed Hickey with 35 points.
This weekend, the August men’s medal will be played for while the ladies will also play for their monthly medal.
The course development classic takes place on Friday and Saturday week, August 12 and 13, and a timesheet is in operation.

Gort

Darragh Coen won the singles competition at Gort at the weekend with 44 points from Seamus Noone on 37, Ger Huban on 36 and Owen O’Donnell on 36. The gross was won by John Greer with 32 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by Mark Deegan with 47 points from Brian Murtagh on 44 points, John Walsh on 42 points and Eanna Melville on 41 points. The gross was won by Ryan Boyle with 35 points.
Open week begins this Saturday and continues until August 14.
In the ladies’ singles on Monday, Margaret O’Sullivan (Castletroy) was the winner with 42 points from Gabrielle Warnock on 38 and Ann Marie Cradock on 37.
The winner of the 18-hole singles Stableford was Josie Cummins with 39 points from Margaret McMahon with 37 points.

Kilrush

In the men’s seniors’ scramble at Kilrush, the winners were Michael Lillis, Noel Thornton, John O’Neill and CP Walsh from Denis Nagle, Tom Cleary and Brendan McNamara with third spot filled by Jim McSwiggan, Noel Enright and John Robinson (38).
The ladies’ outing last Thursday was won by Peggy Mulqueen (34) with 42 points from Mary Nolan (17) with 39 points, Mary G Nolan (21) with 38 points and Mary Young (21) with 38 points.
The category winners were Anne Coen (18) 34 with points, Margaret Griffin (26) 36 points and Stephanie Roughan (29) 35 points.
On Friday, the mixed winners were Muriel Kiely (31) and John Robinson (23) with 54.0 from Ursula Lineen (31) and Brian Scanlan (13) with 57.0. In third spot were Maeve Murphy (26) and John Donnelly (16) with 6 0.0. The gross was won by Mary Young (20) and Jim Young Senior (5) with 70.
In the open singles on Saturday the winner was John Normoyle (12) with 43 points from  Cian O’Mahony (11) on 39 points and Kevin Scully (14) on 39 points (Charleville).  The category winners were Pat Brennan (8) on 34 points, Tony Power (15) (Castletroy) on 38 points and John Mulcahy (22) (Rathbane) on 36 points.
In the open singles stroke on Saturday the winner was John McGrath (17) 66 from Niall McPhillips (20) (Elmgreen) 66 and Maurice Roche (11) (Charlesland) 67. Jim Young Senior (5) won the gross with 75 while the category winners were John Donnelly (16) 67 and David Browne (20) 68.
This Friday, the club hosts one of the most popular mixed competitions of the year for the Howard Trophy and a timesheet is in operation.
On Saturday, there is a team-of-four club fundraiser while on Sunday the 18-hole Hospital Cup men’s competition will take place while Doonbeg Links Society will hold their annual outing at the club from 12 noon to 2pm.

East Clare

On Saturday, East Clare’s mixed foursomes team play Lee Valley in the semi-final of the Munster section of the Irish mixed foursomes. If successful, they will go on to play the winners of the Tralee versus Tramore match in the afternoon. This is the first time that the club has reached this stage in this competition and over the last three months the team has been preparing for the event. Team managers are Sean and Helen Ahern.
In the men’s open singles Simon Earlier (9) was the winner with 44 points from
Mike Reddan (4) 43 points and Pa Moroney (16) 41 points. The junior winner was Ben Kilkenny (20) 43 points.
The winners of the Friday scramble were Pádraig Hession, Mick Ryan, Phil Burke and Margaret MacNamara.
The intermediate men’s scratch cup will be played for this weekend while the ladies will have a golfer-of-the-year event.

Dromoland

The bank holiday Stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Ray O’Neill with 42 points from Pat Canty on 40 points and Sean McMahon on 39 points. Donnie Hassett won the category 18 and over with 37 points while the junior winner was Cormac O’Neill with 41 points.
This Friday and Saturday the monthly medal will be the competition while the junior and senior scratch cups will be played for on Sunday.

Bridgetown

Tipperary Golf Club was the venue for Bridgetown Society’s outing last Saturday when Joe McArthur emerged as the overall winner with 38 points. Tom Buckley was next with 34 followed by Tom O’Shaughnessy, also with 34. The category A winner was Pat Fitzgerald with 33 points while category C was won by Dave Barry on 29 points.
The society’s next outing is to Charleville on August 27 when the tee will be available from 10.30am

Cooraclare/Cree

The annual Cooraclare/Cree captain’s day was held last Monday at Kirlush Golf Club. Society captain, Michael Studdert’s prize was won by Jimmy Gavin of Dromelihy and Dublin.
The outing was won by Martin Morrissey, followed by Michael Lillis, Kieran Lillis, Gearóid Kelly and Kieran Golden. In the category for handicaps 18 and over the winner was Niall Murphy from Kevin Considine and Kenneth McCarthy. The visitors’ prize was won by Tom Prendeville from Tom O’Dea. Longest drive was won by Michael McGurie and nearest the pin by Willie McNamara. The nines were won by Christy Killeen and Gabriel Looney. A hole in one was recorded by Packie O’Dea at the eighth hole.
The ladies’ prizewinners were Rita Sheedy from Margaret Clune, Nicola O’Leary, Claire Pyne, Annie Gallagher and Mary Bolton. In the visitors’ section, Muriel Kiely won from Anne Coote. The longest drive was won by Ailish Lorigan, nearest the pin by Ailish Lorigan, the nines by Margaret Donnelly and Ailish Lorigan.
Caroline Morrissey was awarded first prize in the beginners’ category. In the juvenile category, Harry Lillis won from Shane Lillis.
Claire Pyne will be soceity captain for the coming season.
