A winning start for Wolfe Tones

Wolfe Tones 2-11   St Joseph’s 2-8

THERE was little between Wolfe Tones and St Joseph’s in this Division 1B tie played at Shannon on Sunday. Both sides had a number of players new to senior hurling in their line-ups.
At the end of the first half, the winners led by a point, 0-6 to 0-5 after St Joseph’s had wasted a number of scoring opportunities, particularly from frees.
The home side edged in front in the second period and managed to hold that advantage to the finish on a day when Gareth McPhillips and Shane Chambers scored goals. Declan Malone and Alan O’Neill scored the St Joseph’s goals.

O’Callaghan’s Mills 0-16   Smith O’Brien’s 2-6

PLAYING with the aid of the wind in the first half, O’Callaghan’s Mills built up a six-point lead by the break and this played a big part in their victory. Gary Neville was their top scorer as they went 0-12 to 1-1 ahead by half-time with the losers’ goal coming from Shane O’Brien.
The Killaloe outfit piled on the pressure in the second half and the move of Seamus Gleeson from full-back to centre-forward improved matters for them. He struck for their second goal but a better-balanced home side held on for victory on a day when Kevin O’Callaghan, Jonathon Lyons, Sean O’Gorman and Gerry Cooney impressed.
