A fantastic four-miler in Quilty

The 43rd anniversary of the (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) Athletic Club, incorporating the Michael Egan Memorial four-mile road race and four-mile fun walk attracted a fine turnout of athletes and walkers to Quilty at the weekend.

A strong line-up of athletes went to the start, with Michael Shannon and Kenneth Rodgers, (both St John’s) producing a big battle up front. In a sprint finish, Shannon won the battle in 20.32.

Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare won the Michael Egan shield team title. There was a surprise winner in the senior ladies in Dymphna Ryan (Dundrum AC, Dublin) in 24.08 from last year’s winner, Veronica Colleran (Ennis Track) with Ennis Track retaining the team title ahead of the host club’s Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare A and B teams.

Despite the windy weather conditions, many athletes produced good times on a day when many of the top athletes were amongst the 120 competitors The early leaders were Michael Shannon and Kenneth Rodgers (both (St John’s)) and Julio Cesear F Castro (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) and they went through the one-mile mark in 5.20. At the two-mile mark in 10.40, Julio Cesear F Castro was dropping off the pace and Peter O’Sullivan (Galway) was now on his shoulder, with Fergal Smithwick (Marian) was starting to close the gap, with Willie Devitt (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) now in sixth spot ahead of his clubmate, Thomas Garrahy.

Over the final two miles, the two leaders were shoulder to shoulder before, with 200m remaining, Shannon edged ahead and crossed the finis line in 20.32 For the third race in a row, Kenneth Rodgers finished second (20.35), with Peter O’Sullivan third (21.38) followed by Julio Cesear F Castro, Fergal Smithwick and Willie Devitt.

Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare won the team title and the Michael Egan Shield on a total of 25 points from. Ennis Track on 50, Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare B team on 58 and Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare C on 105 points

The Masters O-40s title went to John Conroy (Ennis Track) on a time of 24.34 from Joe Colleran (Crusheen) and John O’Malley (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) with John Murphy (Ennis Track) taking the O-45s in a time of 25.14 from Michael Kenny (St Mary’s)and Conor Lovett (West Limerick) The O-50’s title went to Ambrose Heagney (Kilnaboy) in 24.06 with TJ Whyte (Tuam) second and Al Meaney (St Mary’s)in third spot.

The O-55s race was dominated by Eugene Moynihan (Marian), who won in a time of 24.11 from Tom Mackey and James Kenny both (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) while in the O-60s, Martin McEvilly (Galway City Harriers) retained his title in 25.32.

The junior men’s title went to Irish international schools athlete Eoin Looney (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare), who finished 12th overall with a time of 23 .57 from Liam Gray and Caoilfhionn O’Dea both Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare.

The ladies’ race is always very competitive and this one was no different, with Veronica Colleran (Ennis Track), Dympna Ryan Dundrum, Marie Carey (Ennis Track) and Emer Power (Sportsworld) setting a very lively pace against the w(Ind) for the first mile. Moving along nicely in the second group was Aisling Kelly (St John’s), Siobhán Lennon (Ennis Track), Elaine Shannon and Emer Keane, Sue Garrahy (all Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare). At the two-mile mark, Dympna Ryan was starting to pull away against the w(Ind). As they entered the final 800m, Ryan was strong and she crossed the finish line in 24.08, a full minute ahead of the 2005, ’06, ’07, ’11 and ’12 champion Veronica Colleran second in 25.04 with Aisling Kelly (St John’s) in third 26.12.
Ennis Track retained the team title on 27 points from the host club Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare A” on 35 and Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare B on 60.

The masters’ ladies’ O-35 title went to Mary Cahill (Ennis Track) in 30.43 with the O-40s going to Siobhán Lennon (Ennis Track) in 26.31 ahead of Loretto Duggan and Mags Malone (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare).
Sue Garrahy (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) captured the O-45s in 28.14.

The masters’ O-50 title went to Carmel McDomhnaill (West Limerick) in 29.06 from Christina Organ (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) and Teresa Ryan (Tulla).

The junior ladies’ title went to Emer Keane in 28.03 from Róisín Considine and Áine Keane (all Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare).

Massive turnout for Cratloe 10k

The Sportsworld Cratloe Soccer Club 10k and 5k fun run on Saturday attracted almost 200 competitors in beautiful, sunny weather conditions.

There was an early break by three athletes, Mike Cunningham (Bilboa), Thomas Grimes (Limerick) and Timmy Glavey (Mayo) who went through the 1k mark in 3.15 and had opened up a slight lead on Pakie Enright from (Cratloe), who runs with (Sportsworld) AC, Dublin, JJ Cremin (Shannon, Limerick) and Gearóid Cleary (Sportsworld) with Gina Clifford (Kildimo, Limerick) running a very big race.

This race developed into a two-man contest after the 3k mark when Timmy Glavey and Thomas Grimes stamped their authority on the race. Going through the half-way point in 16.55, they were starting to go well clear going out on this two-lap course. 

Mike Cunningham, who had competed in Limerick on Friday night in the Feet in the Street four-mile series, had dropped back off the leaders.

On the downhill stretch Tim Glavey began to pull away at 6k and from here on he was in control and won in 34.48, with Thomas Grimes second in 35.05 and Mike Cunningham a very good third in 36.32. Pakie Enright was the first local man, finishing fourth in 38.09.

In the ladies’ race, Gina Clifford (Kildimo) went out hard, producing a 4.10 time for the 1k, she had the rest of the field in single file with Eileen Cremin (Limerick) and Jodie Linsdey (Shannon) working well together for the first 5k.

Gina Clifford recorded a very big win in a time of 45.45, almost three minutes ahead of Eileen Cremin in 48.24 and Jodie Lindsey third in 49.46.

The 5k fun run title went to Brian Gavin (Ballynacally) in 23.44 and the leading lady was (Shannon) O’Grady (Shannon) in 24.23.
