99 medals and still counting


Clare Community Games had many successes at the national finals in Athlone at the weekend. A total of 143 children from 25 areas in Clare took part in a wide variety of sporting and cultural events. These included art, model making, talent, handwriting, table quiz, cross country, projects, indoor soccer, chess, choir and handball.

The Clare U-13s mixed cross country team, who won gold medals at the Community Games National Finals in Athlone.
Ninety-nine medals were brought back to 19 different areas across the county, with 11 areas getting gold. A total of 27 gold, 28 silver, 17 bronze and 27 fourth-place medals were won by Clare competitors.
The first medal came on Saturday when Sophie Barbotin won the hearts of the judges with her performance on the harp, while the handball ladies from Derg won their way to gold on Saturday evening.
On Sunday, Clare won the U-13 mixed cross country, keeping up their usual high standard. The boys won in style, with Patrick O’Rourke leading the field home in glorious sunshine, closely followed by his team mates Luke Carmody (second), Cian Shannon (third) and  Caoilfhionn O’Dea a close fifth. Alex O’Neill led the girls home.
Ballynacally-Lissycasey kept up the high standard in the set dancing that Carrigaholt-Cross set over the past few years by again winning gold.

Clare soccer
ENNIS St John’s won all three Clare outdoor soccer finals, which were held recently at Lees Road, co-ordinated by Flan Brennan. Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry won all three sets of silver medals in the competitions.
In the girls’ U-12 competition, a much stronger Ennis side defeated Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry by 2-0. In the U-15 competition, Ennis St John’s defeated Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-0 in the semi-final and defeated Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry by the same score in the final.
In the boys’ U-12 competition in the quarter-finals, Newmarket-on-Fergus beat Ennistymon/Lahinch/Liscannor 7-1, while Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry won 3-0. In the semis, Ennis beat Kilrush 8-0, while Sixmilebridge/Kilmurry beat near neighbours Newmarket-on-Fergus 4-2.  In the final, the much stronger Ennis St John’s ran out winners on a score of 4-1. All three Ennis teams now go on to represent Clare in the Munster finals in July.
