947 species recorded at Burren National Park

A TOTAL of 947 species were recorded in the Burren National Park during the 2013 24-hour Bioblitz last weekend.

“Unfortunately, despite an early lead we were pipped to the post on Saturday by Colebrook Estate in County Fermanagh, that recorded a total of 1,086 species and Lough Key Forest Park in County Roscommon, that recorded 959 species.

However, we surprised everyone by recording the highest number of bird species for all four participating sites, with a total of 78 species, including a wood sandpiper– a real rarity in this area. We also had a great turnout for our programme of events, which included a bat walk, Burren insects walk, geology walk, Burren wildflowers walk and a scavenger hunt for children. Sincere thanks to everyone who turned out to record and help out for the weekend,” said a representative of the park.

RTÉ recorded a programme about Bioblitz 2013 which included coverage of activities within the Burren National Park. The programme can be viewed on RTÉ Player until July 16, 2013.
