5km summer series victory for Castro and Rynne

KILMURRY Ibrickane/North Clare athletes Sharon Rynne and Julio Cesar F Castro took the honours when the Clare Sports Partnership and Clare Athletics Association held its 5km summer series (race number four) event at the Lisdoonvarna Sports and Amenity Complex last Saturday.
Donnacha O’Mahoney, East Cork, led the big field along at a very good pace, going through the first 1km in 3.10 with Mike Cunningham, Bilboa; Willie Devitt, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare and Julio Cesar F Castro, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, all working together.
The next chasing group of Tom Mackey and Donal Howley, both Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare; Brian Spring, Dariusz Kuranda and Jason Moloney, all from Ennis Track, were making good progress.
At the halfway point, Castro made his way to the front and he opened up a few metres just before the 4km mark. He held that slight advantage to record a fine win with a time of 17.06, with O’Mahoney a close second in 17.10, Mike Cunningham once again finishing third in 17.19 and Willie Devitt fourth in 17.24.
The ladies’ race was dominated by Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, who set a very fast pace from the start going through the 1km in 3.30. At this point, Marian Burke, St Mary’s, was travelling all alone in second spot, followed by a big group, which included Laura Power, Ennis Track; Siobhán Nestor, Sue Garrahy and Noreen Mackey, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare; Rita Kierce, St Mary’s and Hilda O’Connor, Ennis Track.
Rynne was well on her way to victory at the 3km mark, where she had a big lead built up and she won in 19.44, with Burke taking second in 20.30, ahead of Kierce (21.42) and Mackey (21.55).
