Huge test facing Kilmaley

Clare senior camogie champions Kilmaley will travel to Kilkenny on Sunday to take on Rower-Inistioge in the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship semi-final.At the end of last year, the Kilkenny club became the first side from that county to win the Leinster title when they beat Shinrone from Offaly in the decider played at their winners’ home grounds. The winners produced a great final quarter to record a seven-point victory. In the Kilkenny intermediate final they scored a 3-10 to 0-8 victory over Tullaroan, making up for the disappointment of county final defeats in 2009 and 2010.Kilmaley also made history back in November when they became the first Clare club to be crowned Munster intermediate champions. In that final, they had an easy 4-10 to 0-3 win over St Anne’s from Waterford.Four years ago, Kilmaley contested the All-Ireland series in the junior championship but were beaten by Four Roads from Roscommon“This is a huge day for the club,” Kilmaley manager Gerry Kennedy agreed …

Understrength Avenue bow out

Avenue United             0 Manulla United             2 Avenue United’s hopes of winning a place in the quarter-finals of the FAI U-17 Cup ended at rain-lashed Lisdoonvarna on Saturday last when they went under to Manulla from Mayo in a round four tie.The only game to take place in the county at the weekend, the game was switched from Lees Road to the North Clare venue. The home side were unlucky to bow out of the competition as they matched their opponents for most of this tie.Avenue went into the game without four first choice players that proved to be a huge blow to their hopes. The match clashed directly with a Clare minor football trial and this resulted in the loss of some key defenders. Missing on the day were Evan McNamara (injured), Levi Howard, Cian Crimmins and Michael Moloney. There was nothing between the sides in the opening half, at the end of which the game …

Chasing Oscar Traynor quarter-final spot

The unavailability of Eoin O’Brien is a big blow to Clare for Sunday’s Oscar Traynor clash away to Cork AUL at Douglas Hall on Sunday.O’Brien picked up a red card in Clare’s 5-0 win over Roscommon at the Connacht county’s venue at the beginning of January and the appeal against that decision failed last week.Clare manager Liam Murphy agreed this week that “Eoin is a huge loss but we have to move on now”, before adding that Stephen Hickey has been added to the panel. The Ennis Town Rock player is very experienced and his availability is a boost to the team’s hopes of getting through to the quarter-finals. Sunday’s game will kick-off at 2pm at Douglas Hall and will be played on an AstroTurf surface. Playing on the artifical surface won’t be a problem for Clare, however. The manager pointed out that practically all the team’s preparations have been done on AstroTurf venues at UL, Ashling Annacotty, Lees Road …

Rain, hail and wind doesn’t stop fundraiser

WEST Clare Mini Marathon Committee chairman Willie McGrath was relieved that the 15th cancer centre fundraising run/walk went ahead on Sunday. Awoken in the early hours of Sunday morning by hailstones and high winds, he was convinced the fundraiser would have to be postponed.“At 3.50am after that shower, which most people I spoke to heard, I got up and I was down around the house. I came back up and I said to Mary, ‘the West Clare Mini Marathon is off for sure. It has to be’,” he said in Kilkee on Sunday.“Then we got up at 7am and we said a few prayers. We went into town later and I met some of the stewards. They are the driving force and they said ‘no, it’s going ahead because so many people would be disappointed if it didn’t’. Conditions were very testing but it’s over, thank God,” the committee chairman added. The 640 runners and walkers had to contend with wind, …
