County titles for Shannon and Guilfoyle

The Clare Athletics Association 10-mile Road Championships were held in conjunction with the Michael Sonny Murphy Memorial in (Kilnaboy) last week. Michael Shannon (Kilnaboy) and Julio Cesear F Castro (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) set the pace for this race and Shannon pulled away at the three-mile mark and came home a very comfortable winner in 53.21. Julio Cesear F Castro (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) won the silver medal in 56.39, with Thomas Garrahy (Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare) in third spot with a time of 60.21.The men’s team title went to Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare with 35  points. In the ladies’ race, Tracy Guilfoyle (Kilnaboy) produced another big race to claim the 10-mile title in 66.54 with Siobhán Lennon (Ennis Track) taking the runner-up spot in 67.10 and Imogen Cotter (Ennis Track) taking the bronze medal in 70.05.The team title went to Ennis Track, with a total of 20 points. It’s A Doddle in Cork for O’Leary

There was plenty of Clare success on the point-to-point fields over the weekend, including a very impressive victory for Ronnie O’Leary’s 7-2 shot It’s A Doddle in the second division of the five-year-old geldings’ maiden at last Sunday’s Dromahane, County Cork meeting.

Cork golfer on the mark for senior scratch cup

There was keen competition for the senior scratch cup at Shannon on Sunday when Mark Shanahan (+2) from Castlemartyr emerged as the winner with one shot to spare over Eddie McCormack (+2) from Galway. In third spot, also on 147, was Gary O’Flaherty (+1) from Cork Golf Club followed by Pat Murray (+3) from Limerick.

Round bales going nowhere for now

  IN a week that has been marked by tales of a serious fodder shortage, Querrin farmer Daithí Scanlan has apparently eschewed convention. An array of recently harvested round bales are visible in Tarmon East, near Poulnasherry Bay. The only problem is that the field is too wet to allow Daithí to extract his newly minted round bales. “A picture can tell a thousand words but maybe not this time. They’re not great bales. You’d want a helicopter to get them out,” he laughed, when describing the quality of his out-of-season hay. “It was hay that I hadn’t cut last year. We got a chance to cut it and bale it recently but we couldn’t take them out of the field then, it got so wet again.” He doesn’t think the bales would be devoured by his cattle, even if he could remove them from the sodden field. “I don’t think you could use them, it got so wet.
