Late, late Dubs break Clare hearts

Clare District Soccer League  2 Dublin Athletic Union League  2 (AET, Dublin won 3-2 on penalties) CLARE players and officials were disgusted at the manner of this defeat in the County Grounds on Sunday, as the referee played over five minutes of injury time at the end of extra time, which allowed Dublin to snatch a very late equaliser.Five minutes of injury time would be a lot for a 45 minute half but allowing it for a 10-minute period was baffling and it cost Clare the match. The Banner sideline were roaring for the final whistle when Dublin were awarded a penalty after Eoin O’Brien handled the ball on the line, almost four-and-a-half minutes into injury time. O’Brien was red-carded, Keith Dunne slotted home the spot kick and Dublin were back from the dead.In the shoot-out, both sides were unsuccessful with their first attempt, both scored the second and Clare took the lead, scoring their third while their keeper John …

Brian McMahon converted past the A team’s new signing, Liam Deasy.Few chances were created from open play but both sets of defenders were finding problems in dealing with set pieces. The equaliser also came from the penalty spot after the match official penalised the B defence for jersey pulling and one of Hermitage’s longest-serving players, David Moloney, shot low past Abdul to tie up the game.Things didn’t look good for the eventual winners when they were reduced to 10 men with the sending off …

Ennis lose out to Waterpark

Waterpark 20 Ennis 12Ennis travelled to Waterford last Saturday for the quarter-final of the Avonmore Pan-Munster U-17 league. The home team had the better start and channelled all their plays through their out-half, David Kavanagh, whose distribution and control was central to their dominance in the opening 20 minutes. After seven minutes, Waterpark carved open the Ennis defence and crossed the line under the posts for the first converted try of the game. Ennis were penalised shortly after for not rolling away at the breakdown but the penalty attempt went just wide of the post. However, on the 15-minute mark, Waterpark once again wrong-footed the Ennis defence and crossed for a second try close to the posts, leaving an easy conversion attempt and the score at 14-0 to the home side.  As the half progressed, the visitors came more into the game, helped in no small way by resolute performances from James Crowley-Hayes, Liam Halpin and Ciarán  O’Connor. David Flynn …
