10k titles for Colleran and Shannon


THERE was a large entry and many charities benefited from the seventh annual Clare 10km mini-marathon, which was staged around the streets of Ennis last Saturday, starting and finishing at the Lees Road Sports Complex.

Kilnaboy’s Michael Shannon was out on his own before they reached the 1km mark and he came home in a time of 31.01, ahead of Julio Cesear F Castro, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare (32.16) and Fergal Smithwick, Marian (33.01).
In the senior ladies’ race, there was a great victory for Ennis Track’s Veronica Colleran with a time of 36.41. Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, came second in 37.39 and Tracy Guilfoyle, Kilnaboy, was third in 39.08.
Shannon set a lively pace, reaching the 1km mark in 3.03 and he went through the 2km mark in 6.01. Julio Cesear F Castro, the Munster Masters’ O-35 3,000m champion, was chasing the leader going towards the Maid of Erin, along with Marian’s Fergal Smithwick. A chasing group of four included Willie Devitt, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare; Paul Keane, Craughwell; Patrick Quinn, Ennis Track and Simon Mangan, Gneeveguilla, Kerry.
At the 5km mark, gaps were starting to appear but Shannon pressed ahead, going through this point in 15.24. He recorded a fine win, followed by Julio Cesear F Castro and Fergal Smithwick.
The ladies’ race attracted the larger number of athletes with former winners Veronica Colleran, Ennis Track and Eimear Power, Sportsworld in the field. Sharon Rynne, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare, set the pace and led the big field through the 1km in 3.25. Colleran and Tracy Guilfoyle, Kilnaboy started to close the gap with Siobhán Lennon, Ennis Track covering all the moves along with Breda Lynch, Dooneen and Eimear Power, Sportsworld.
Colleran made a decisive move at the 7km mark and crossed the finishing line in first place, with the early leader Sharon Rynne second, followed by Tracy Guilfoyle.
Tom Larkin won the Masters O-40 in 35.41 from Liam McGuane, Ennis Track and Patrick Healy, Marian. Gerry Galvin, Mayo won the Masters men’s O-45 race in a very good time (37.50) with Pat Morrissey, Ennis Track taking the second spot ahead of John Murphy, Kilrush.
The O-50 race once again went to James Kenny, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare in 37.22 from Aidan Cabey, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare and Conor Flynn. The O-55 title went to Tom Mackey, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare in 39.40, followed by Frank Garrihy, Ennis Track with Michael Harvey, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare. The O-60 was won by Tom Madden, Marian in 39.58.
The junior men’s title went to Karl Fitzmaurice, Shannon in 37.47 from Jonathon Martin, Ennis Track. Muireann O’Shea, Marian took the junior ladies’ title in 44.44.
Gráinne McGuane, Galway City Harriers won the Masters ladies’ O-35 title in 42.46 from Siobhán O’Reilly, Ennis Track and Caroline Conroy, West Limerick. The O-40 race was won by Paula Montwill, Bootcamp in 44.08 from Sinéad Walsh with Rachel Egan, Shannon Road Runners, third.
In the Masters’ O-45 ladies’ race Josephine Killeen, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare won with a time of 41.05 from Rose Enright, St Mary’s and Helen O’Hanlon, Ennis.
Rita Kierce, St Mary’s won the O-50 for the second year in-a-row in 40.49 from Carmel McDomhnaill, West Limerick and Maura Falsey, Kilmurry Ibrickane/North Clare.
