Clare golfer recaptures Ulster Women’s Strokeplay title

Aideen Walsh, who is a member of both Lahinch and Woodstock Golf Clubs, was crowned Ulster Women’s Strokeplay Champion as she defended the title that she secured in 2021. Walsh finished -5 for the tournament, five strokes ahead of Roscommon Golf Club’s Olivia Costello and Kate Lanigan from Hermitage Golf Club. This was a dominant victory for the Ennis native as an opening round of 69 saw her take a two-shot lead over Jan Browne. Despite a double-bogey on her very first hole, Walsh produced some terrific golf over the rest of the round. Birdies on the third, fifth, tenth, fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth holes allowed her to finish the round on -4. Despite a bogey on the thirteenth during her second round, Walsh birdied holes 10 and 15 to give herself every chance of recapturing the title. Ennis Hockey Club fundraises to achieve dream facility

AN Ennis sporting club which has to travel to Limerick to play matches is hoping an upcoming fundraising event will help achieve its dream of building its own multi-sport facility which will also benefit the wider community. Established in October 2019, Ennis Hockey Club came from the love of hockey with the driving force behind the club a group of volunteers passionate about the sport and bringing this sport to kids and adults of Clare. It is the club’s ambition to build a multi-sport 2G facility in Ennis where they can play, compete and develop the next generation of people passionate about this Olympic sport. As well as members having to travel to Limerick for home matches, club trainings are currently held either at the CBS School or at the Planet Entertainment Centre however the surface of these pitches is not really suitable for the game. Hoey emerged as the winner following the nine hole play off when he returned 61 points to win by one from Jonathan Fennelly (14). Vivian Killeen (14), also with 60 points, was third followed by Michael Sullivan (16) with 59, Frank Doherty (10) with 59, Brian McCarthy (5) with 58 James Byrne (12) with 58, Tommy Dalton (13) with 57 Kerrill O’Mahony (4) with 57 and Michael O’Friel (4) with 56. Michael O’Kelly won the gross with 57 from Fergal Deasy with 56. Valerie leads Irish team By Seamus Hayes ENNIS woman Valerie Hassett will captain the Irish team for the European senior ladies team championships in September. The team will be led by recent Irish senior women’s close champion Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) and includes a host of experience including 2016 British Senior Women’s Champion Laura Webb and Gertie McMullen (The Island) who has won both the Irish Senior Women’s Open and Close Championships in the past.The championship takes place in Mont Garni Golf Club, near Charleroi,from September 4 to 8. Barton Shield BALLYNEETY golf club in Limerick hosted the north Munster section of the Barton shield last weekend when six Clare clubs were in action. In round one Ennis beat Roscrea, Lahinch beat the host club and East Clare beat Dromoland while Kilrush went down to Adare Manor and Woodstock lost out to Limerick. The local man who plays off a handicap of 15 returned a score of 103 and had three strokes to spare over Mark Shannon (7) who returned 106.33in the race for captain Cyril Kelly’s prize. They were followed by John O’Sullivan (20) with 107. 67, Tom Cleary (20) with 2109.67 and Colm Murphy (19) with 11o.33. Jim Young junior (5) won the gross with 123 whle the leading qualifier was Anthony Gilmartin (20) with 64. Huge turnout for Dave Foley testimonial at Dromoland By Seamus Hayes THE David Foley testimonial day on Friday was a huge success. After twenty years as the professional at Dromoland, Foley is leaving to take up a position in Scotland. The winners of the team event with an impressive 121 points were Majella and Ellie Cotgreave, Mary Anne Sheils and Moira Cunningham.. they had ten points to spare over John O’Shaughnessy, Tom O’Sullivan, Ellie and Tony Cotgreave who were two ahead of Nigel and Alex Frost. Fergal and David Kennedy. Cattle run amuck at Woodstock Golf Club

Officials at Woodstock Golf Club in Shanaway, Ennis hope to have a reduced course open for play this weekend after cattle caused considerable damage to the greens and fairways. As many as 40 cattle got onto the course last Friday night, resulting in management having to close the course to play. Staff arriving for work early on Saturday morning observed a herd of cattle on the course and found up to 10 greens damaged. Particularly serious damage was caused to the sixth, eighth and 13th greens, as well as to the 13th fairway. The course was immediately closed, resulting in the cancellation of weekend competitions and the loss of a significant amount of green fees. A spokesperson for the club this week paid tribute to neighbouring Clare clubs. “They have given us great assistance and helped with honouring our bookings. As we speak, we are awaiting a visit from insurance representatives to assess the damage. Hopefully, we will be able …
