FURTHER concerns have been raised in West Clare over the adequacy of street lighting in rural areas. At the March meeting of the Municipal District committee, the matter was brought up by Councillor Gabriel Keating who called for upgrade works in Knockerra Village. “There are a number of houses on the side road close to the church and there is not public lighting there whatsoever,” he said. “I would ask the authority to look at rectifying this situation as soon as possible.” A written reply from Alan Kennelly, Senior Executive Engineer (SEE) outlined that works are unlikely unless money becomes available to the authority. “Clare County Council does not have any plans to extend public lighting along the L-6168-0 – the side road up by the Church,” the response said. “If a funding source should become available then public lighting may be installed.” The response prompted Councillor Ian Lynch to ask officials to provide estimates on the cost of street …

A KILRUSH-based councillor is to make efforts to extend street lighting between the Shanakyle Road and St Senan’s Graveyard. Independent member of the West Clare Municipal District, Ian Lynch, tabled a motion calling for the extension and seeking details on options and costs for new lights. “St Senan’s Graveyard Group contacted me to see if they could get the lights extended out about 200 metres,” Councillor Lynch told the January meeting of the district committee. “The isolation that people are experiencing through Covid is prompting many to get some bit of comfort out of visiting the graveyard to see their loved ones. Sometimes people have gotten caught in the evening times, on the short evenings. The group asked me to put in this notice of motion. A LANE close to Wolfe Tones grounds and St Conaire’s National School is being used extensively by drug dealers, it has been claimed. The dealers apparently take advantage of poor visibility in the area to sell their products away from the gaze of the public. At this week’s meeting of Shannon Municipal District, Councillor Mike McKee raised the matter and called for steps to be taken to make the area less secluded. He told the meeting that, after a meeting with representatives of the GAA club some weeks ago, he had been told about the issue, which he says arises on a lane running from St Conaire’s close to the astroturf pitches at Wolfe Tones. “There is quite a bit of drug dealing at this pathway,” he alleged. “This is the largest primary school in Shannon and the largest sports club and it is being used as a drug den and for drug dealers,” he claimed.
