Fight for purchase of Our Lady’s continues

EFFORTS to have Clare County Council purchase Our Lady’s Hospital for future development are continuing, despite the council’s CEO effectively ruling out the proposal earlier this week. CEO Pat Dowling said that a feasibility study into the purchase of the site, which did not sell at auction last week, found it would be financially prohibitive. However, members of the Ennis Municipal District have voted in favour of formally requesting the CEO to buy the site, while Councillor Johnny Flynn has written to the CEO, asking him to reconsider the council’s position. At the meeting of Ennis Municipal District, a motion was proposed by both Councillor Flynn and Councillor Mary Howard, asking that the chief executive buy the site as an “Ennis strategic project”. Councillor Flynn said the Ennis site is the “best one in Clare” to fit in with national policy and avail of potential capital funding under the Government’s National Planning Framework Ireland 2040. Lahinch promenade masterplan completed by consultants

Clare County Council is currently preparing a programme of repair works to infrastructure damaged by the storms from December 13, 2013 to January 6, 2014. When completed, the programme will be submitted to the Central Emergency Response Unit of the Department of the Environment for approval. This news emerged following a motion from Councillor Bill Slattery asking for an update on planned remedial works for Lahinch promenade and a timescale for when the work is expected to be completed. He said he appreciated the work carried out in 2014 by the council but said more is needed. “Lahinch is one of the major seaside resorts in Munster,” he pointed out. Councillor Slattery also questioned the masterplan, which he said he has not seen. The plan was referred to by senior executive engineer, Steve Lahiffe, in his written reply to the motion. Councillor Slattery said, “This masterplan is a joke. Councillor Nagle was involved in a masterplan before I became a councillor …

Doonbeg Pier feasibility study

CLARE County Council is to contribute €5,000 towards a feasibility study of Doonbeg Pier. This will evaluate the potential of upgrading the pier, which has been the subject of a long campaign by Doonbeg Community Council. “Doonbeg has a small pier which is inadequate and because it is tidal people can only access the pier at certain tides. The community is doing everything to develop tourism. Doonbeg is on the coast, so sea-angling would be a normal extension of its tourism product,” commented Clare TD Michael McNamara. “I expect that sea-angling would be popular with customers of Doonbeg Golf Resort. Now that the resort is part of the worldwide Trump organisation, there is renewed optimism in Doonbeg for the future of tourism and the upgrade of the local pier infrastructure has to be considered as a good investment,” he added. Money is available from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to develop piers but only when the project …
