Fitness first for Ennis students

A FITNESS app created by Ennis students which aims to prevent injury among young female sports athletes, has scooped second prize in a prestigious competition. Third year students Amy Hennessy and Juliette Purcell from Coláiste Muire turned judges’ heads at the BD STEM Stars competition with their app which focuses on preventing anterior cruciate ligament injuries in young women. Their research also found that young women are given the same fitness coaching as their male peers despite having different body forms. The competition is run by Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), one of the world’s leading medical device companies. First place was jointly claimed by two Kinsale Community College teams, which earned their school a cheque of €10,000 for STEM related facilities.  The BD STEM Stars 2024 Award, which is supported by the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB), is the biggest such awards programme in Munster.  The competition was launched five years ago by BD to promote and encourage …

Coláiste Muire secure historic cup final spot

Coláiste Muire will line out in the Pinergy Girls Schools U-19 Munster Senior Cup final next Wednesday after a whirlwind few weeks for the Ennis school. This is the first year that Coláiste Muire have fielded a rugby team with their progress nothing short of remarkable. The team has made an impressive entrance into the U-19A schools cup competition and are set to face off against Sacred Heart Clonakilty in the final. With Joint captains Lyndsey Clarke and Ellis O’Flaherty, who have represented Munster at underage level, at the helm, along with the experience of Orna Moynihan, Sally Kelly and Jennifer Weston, the team possesses quality operators and players who are willing to learn. While Coláiste Muire has achieved great success in music, debating, volleyball, Gaelic Games and athletics, the introduction of a ladies rugby team is another significant milestone. Clare students honoured for career skills awards

Eleven students from Clare received awards in the 2018 National Careers Skills competition. Nine students from Coláiste Muire, Ennis and two from Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon were awarded prizes for their submissions in the Transition Year category. Ennis studen Éabha Fitzpatrick was awarded joint second prize for her work as an aeronautical engineer while Aoife Daffy was highly commended for her work experience as an accountant. Commended students in the category were Shona Duffy for arts administration, Aoife Guilfoyle and Finia O’Brien for occupational therapy, Regina Yeung for accountancy, Amy Browne for her work in hospitality and both Maryam Rahman and Michelle Power for their work experience as a doctors. Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon students Eva Cullinan and Aoibhann De Burca Quinlivan were highly commended for their work experience as an airport search unit officer and a journalist respectively. Walk or bike it to the Coláiste

Coláiste Muire in Ennis will launch its ‘Fresh Air Friday’ initiative this Friday, as part of efforts to secure a Green-Schools Travel Flag. The Travel Flag encourages students, parents and teachers to walk, cycle, car-pool, Park N’ Stride or use public transport on the school run. Staff , as well as parents of students being driven to school, will be leaving the car at home or a distance away to participate in the initiative, which is being facilitated by An Taisce Green-Schools and supported by Clare County Council. Having saved 2,650,000 litres of water from 2011 to 2014 while working on the Green-Schools Water Flag, one of three Flags held by Coláiste Muire, the school is now working on securing the Travel Flag. “At present over 65% of their 860 pupils at Coláiste Muire are arriving to school in a car, so the school has taken on the Green-Schools Travel flag with great enthusiasm,” commented Róisín Garvey, travel education officer …
