Gardaí confirm fatality following M18 collision

GARDAÍ are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision on the M18 southbound between J12 and J13, Gort to Ennis Road this afternoon. At approximately 1.20pm Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene of a collision involving a truck and a car on the M18. The sole occupant of the car, a man in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. The male driver of the truck was uninjured. The scene is currently being examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local traffic diversions are expected to remain in place until later this evening. Tunnel to close for maintenance work

The Limerick Tunnel will be closed this Monday evening for scheduled maintenance. Direct Route, which operates the tunnel, says both the northbound and southbound lanes will be closed from 8pm until 6am on Tuesday morning. Diversions will be in place via junction 4 (Cratloemoyle) for traffic travelling from the Clare side while northbound traffic will be diverted at junction 2 (Dock Road). The diversion route includes the R445 (Ennis Road), the R527 (Condell Road) and the N69 (Dock Road).

Cattle run amuck at Woodstock Golf Club

Officials at Woodstock Golf Club in Shanaway, Ennis hope to have a reduced course open for play this weekend after cattle caused considerable damage to the greens and fairways. As many as 40 cattle got onto the course last Friday night, resulting in management having to close the course to play. Staff arriving for work early on Saturday morning observed a herd of cattle on the course and found up to 10 greens damaged. Particularly serious damage was caused to the sixth, eighth and 13th greens, as well as to the 13th fairway. The course was immediately closed, resulting in the cancellation of weekend competitions and the loss of a significant amount of green fees. A spokesperson for the club this week paid tribute to neighbouring Clare clubs. “They have given us great assistance and helped with honouring our bookings. Mid May reopening of Ennis Limerick rail line

With the flood waters finally beginning to recede, Iarnród Éireann expects water levels to have dropped sufficiently for a mid May reopening of the railway line between Limerick and Ennis. Extensive flooding on the line at Ballycar had forced the closure of the rail link since last December. Since then bus transfers were in operation between Limerick and Ennis, with a limited service for Sixmilebridge Station, for the duration of the closure. The line flooded following a significant increase in water levels at Ballycar Lough due to the heavy rainfall in December and January, and the nature of inflows and outflows from the lough due to the karst landscape in the area. While the intense rainfall ceased in January, inflows caused flood levels at Ballycar to peak in early March at 1.4 metres above the rail line. This has now fallen to 0.9 metres above the line, with 1.75 miles of track remaining flooded, and Iarnród Éireann forecast that – unless further extreme …
