Fatal collission at Birdhill

Gardaí are investigating a fatal collision on the M7 at Birdhill, County Tipperary this afternoon (Tuesday). A collision involving three vehicles occurred at approximately 2pm. A man in his 70s has been fatally injured and two other people have been brought by Ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. Gardaí and Emergency Services are at the scene and diversions are in place. The  southbound lanes of the motorway between junctions 26 (Nenagh) and 27 (Birdhill) expected to remain closed to traffic overnight. Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them. Clare gardaí seize cocaine worth €70,000

The Clare Divisional Drugs unit have arrested two people after they seized cocaine with an estimated value of €70,000 in Birdhill County Tipperary. Two people have been arrested following the operation in County Tipperary  and follow up searches were also carried out at a house in Newmarket on Fergus where drug paraphernalia were discovered. As part of ongoing investigations targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the mid-west region, a car was stopped and searched by gardaí from the Clare Divisional Drugs Unit in Birdhill, County Tipperary on Thursday, November 30. During the search gardaí discovered cocaine with an estimated street value of €70,000 pending analysis. Further searches were carried out at a house in Newmarket-on-Fergus where drug paraphernalia including a weighing scales and packaging were discovered. A man in his 30s and woman in her 20s have been arrested and are currently detained at Shannon Garda station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act, …

Dragonboats help women with cancer

A NEW group in Castleconnell, just over the Limerick border, is looking to help women who are recovering from breast cancer by dragonboat racing. An ancient Chinese sport, dragonboat racing dates back over 2,000 years and has been in Ireland since the 1990s. Chairperson of Shannon Dragons, Bríd O’Connell, says it is very helpful for women in recovery. “It’s the upper body movement. It aids recovery and it helps to minimise lymphedema, which is a complication you can have if you’ve had the lymph nodes removed.” Originally from Birdhill, Bríd has close ties to Clare, having gone to school in Killaloe and having a role with Sixmilebridge Scouts Group. She says some women from Clare are already involved with Shannon Dragons but she wants to spread the word a bit. “We have women coming from Shannon and Ennis but we want to reach into the community in Clare; we want women around the county to know about this. High Court settlement in ‘house demolition’ case

A couple whose home was demolished without any prior notice to them while a new dual carriageway was being constructed between Limerick and Nenagh have settled their High Court damages action. Brian and Mary O’Shaughnessy claimed the last eight and a half years had been a nightmare after their single storey two bedroom old Irish farmhouse, at Annaholty, Birdhill, was razed to the ground and the site cleared on September 6th 2006. The site was never used for the new road. As a result of the loss of their home,which the couple was renovating at the time, they sought damages for alleged negligence from a number of parties including from Limerick County Council and The National Roads Authority, who it was claimed were both responsible for the operation, design and acquisition of land, and oversaw construction of the N7 dual carriageway scheme.
