Kelly’s strike ends 38 year wait for Clare

Clare 1-23 Waterford 2-19 What a difference a week makes! Seven days after Clare and Waterford played a draw in what was a disappointing contest, they turned in a thrilling replay which went right down to the wire before joint Clare captain Tony Kelly showed his value to the team, when pointing twice in the final minute of play as Clare bridged a 38 year gap to their last success in this competition. It was a tremendous win for Clare, who had trailed their opponents for most of the 70 minutes. A goal behind after just 20 seconds, they found themselves six points in arrears with 22 minutes to play. Then Kelly finished off a tremendous move with a goal and they quickly cut the deficit to two points before Waterford stretched their advantage to four with 12 minutes to play. Newmarket and Bridge Utd in Clare cup final

Thirty eight years after they last met in the final of the Clare junior cup, then known as the Haughey cup, near neighbours and arch rivals Newmarket Celtic and Bridge United will battle it out for the 2015 Clare junior cup title at the end of the month. Bridge were 3-0 winners over Shannon Olympic on Friday evening while, twenty four hours later, holders Newmarket Celtic booked their passage to the decider with a 5-2 win over Burren United. Both games were played at the county grounds in Doora which will also host the final. Midway through the first half of Friday’s game, Bridge United took the lead when Darren Murphy headed home from a Chris Lake corner.
