Duggan wins Dromoland captains prize

NICKY Duggan won the captain’s (Con Ryan) prize at Dromoland on Sunday. There was a huge turnout for the event and after 27 holes Duggan with 104.5 had a shot and a half to spare over Flan Downes. In third spot was Brian Hickey on 107.5 followed by John O’Connor on a similar score, Gay O’Gara on 108.5, and Leonard Shanahan on 109. Mark Reynolds won the gross with 74.
Other prizewinners were Donnie Hassett 109 (over-18 handicaps), Brian Kelly 113 (past captains), John O’Donnell 32 nett (front nine), Declan O’Leary 30 nett (back nine, Jason Ryan 46 points (captain’s prize to the boys).
Suzanne McConway was the winner of the captain’s (Corn Ryan) prize to the ladies at Dromoland. In this 18-hole stroke competition, Siobhan Dyar was second followed by Ann Nix and Julie Newman Joan Ryan won the gross.
This week the North Munster mixed foursomes final is taking place in Lahinch and Dromoland will fly the Clare flag. Their opponents are Adare Manor.
Next week’s competition will be 18-hole Stableford.

Ennis

Ennis bowed out of the race for the Jimmy Bruen Shield at Doonbeg links last Wednesday when they lost to Rathbane from Limerick in the north Munster semifinal.
Having won through the first round series of games in impressive style at Woodstock, the Ennis followers travelled to Doonbeg in confident mood last week but, on the evening, Rathbane, a Limerick city club, won through and they will no go on to contest the Munster final.
Mary Leahy won the captain’s (Ann Kelly) prize at Ennis at the weekend with a score of 107.5. In second place was Pat Leacy on 113 followed by Bridget Hoey 114.5, Patricia Ramsey 114.5, Marianne McGough 116, Della Burns 116.5, Kitty Morris 116.5, Ann Casey 117, Claire Ruane 117.5 and Muiriosa Connolly 118.5. The gross was won by Pamela Murphy 76.
Other prize winners were Derry Nalty (best granny), Teresa Felly (past captain), Valerie Hassett (front nine), Anna Glynn (back nine), Maura Ryan (nearest the pin) and Maura McNicholas (long drive).
In the beginners’ nine-hole competition, Mary Woulfe was the winner with 55 from Una O’Reilly.
Michael O’Reilly won the lady captain’s prize to the men with 66 from Sean Miniter on 67, Des Neylon on 68 and Paul Farrell on 68. Bob Loftus won the gross with 73.
In the lady captain’s mixed competition, the winners were Liz Dinan and Johnny Kierse from Claire and Ollie Kenneally with Joan Malone and Tony Coote in third spot. Maura McNicholas and Brian Gilligan won the gross.

Lahinch

Last Wednesday’s ladies open singles Stableford competition on the Castle course in Lahinch was won by Sandra Smith with 37 points.
In Thursday’s open singles, Stephen Van Loon was the winner with 39 points from Michael Murphy on 37 and Leonard Shanahan on 37. Alan Ryan won the gross with 31 points.
The winner of the ladies open singles on the say day was Sinead Sexton with 39 points from Ita Mangan on 27.
Sunday’s men’s singles Stableford competition for the O’Brien Cup was won by Kevin Glynn with 36 points.
In a ladies singles Stableford competition on the Castle course, Sinead Sexton was the winner with 38 points.

Shannon

The Wednesday open singles saw Fergus Murphy victorious by virtue of a better back nine from Adam McMahon, each returning 41points. James Begley captured third place with 40 points while Lewy Halpin Jnr won the gross with a level par round.
The major competition at the weekend was The June Medal that saw a runaway victory for Liam Walshe with 62 nett. Liam covered the front nine in four over with birdies at the second and eighth. Liam was also four over for the back nine with a further birdie at the 18th being the highlight.
He had four shots to spare from Paul Keary who was around in one over par for a nett 66. Paul was out in one over par with birdies at the second and sixth. An inward half of level par was distinguished by an eagle three at the eighteenth. In third place was John O Connell on 67 nett. The gross was captured by Tony Keane with a one over par 73.
The back nine was required to separate Murty O’Donoghue and Barry Fitzgerald who finished fourth and fifth respectively, each returning 68 Nett.James Kierans in sixth and he just edged out Feidhlim Hillery by virtue of a better back nine, both returning 69 nett.
The Ladies ran an open rumble last Tuesday that saw Maura Mulcahy accompanied by visitors Candy Cheung and Ann Ni Nuallain victorious with 82 points. They had one to spare from Connie Corry accompanied by two Ennis members, Aideen Considine and Claire Carmody on 81 points. In third place with 80 points were Maureen Parks, Finola O’Donnell and A Smyth.
The July men’s medal will be played for this week while the ladies will have a singles Stableford competition in aid of cancer research. Open week begins on this Saturday.

Kilrush

Last week’s seniors competition at Kilrush was won by PJ Maher, Bill O’Mahony, Paddy Carmody and Peter Hunter with 67 points from Tom Clarke; Jimmy McSwiggan, Noel Enright and Barry Taylor on 66 points with third spot filled by Matt Fitzpatrick, John Stapleton, Mick Lane and Noel Cooney 65 points.
Tom Clarke (9) won the Young Trophy at Kilrush on Sunday with a score of 66 nett. He had one shot to spare over James Collins (14) with Matt Fitzpatrick (13) in third spot on 68. Jim Young senior (6) won the gross with 74 while the nines were won by Declan O’Donovan (7) with 31.5 and Gabriel Looney (11) with 34.5.
Next week is open week at the club and there will be a full list of competitions throughout the week.
In the ladies singles v par competition last Thursday, Elizabeth Blake (21) was the winner with six up from Clare Pyne (20) with five up. In third spot was Mary McNamara (24) with five up followed by Anne Gallagher (24) with five up. The category winners were Niamh Whelan (14) with five up, Agnes Shannon (21) with four up and Pearl Mulcaire (29) with four up.

Woodstock

In the ladies monthly medal competition at Woodstock, Fran Feighery won category A with 76 nett while Bernie Power was the winner of category B with 71.
The winners of the nine hole mixed were Paul and Teresa Sherlock with 18 points from Jim McMahon and Jenny McElhinney on 17 points.
Martin Nugent and John McGrath were the winners of the Holmpatrick Cup at Woodstock with 46 points. Joe Collins and Nicky Ryan were in second place with 45 points. The winners will compete in the Clare final in Ennis.
There will be a club singles competition this weekend.

East Clare

Kevin Stritch was the winner of the captain’s (Sean Ahern) prize at East Clare at the weekend when he had a five shot margin of victory over Enda Donnellan (104.5) with Teddy O’Hanlon in third spot on 105. Brian McCarthy was fourth with 1-5 followed by Michael O’Halloran (106.5), Mattie McNamara (108) and Michael McMahon (108). Padraig Hession w on the gross with 76.
Other prizewinners included William O’Brien (category 1) Stephen Moloney (category 2), Nick Ryan (seniors), Eoin McGuinness (juniors) and Breege Scanlon (ladies’ prize). The best score on Saturday came from Mark O’Malley while Sunday’s best score came from Patsy Kett.
The ladies section had great success at the weekend in Ennis when two advanced to the next round of the AA leagues. The minor and intermediate teams progressed to the next round but the challenge cup team bowed out of contention. The winning teams will next be in action on Sunday week, July 11, in Dromoland.
This weekend, East Clare will play host to the North Munster section of the Junior Cup. The men’s section will have a singles Stableford competition.

Spanish Point

On Friday evening the popular team scramble was run in conjunction with the official opening of the new practice nets, by men’s captain Gary Carroll and the evening included a very enjoyable barbecue and prizegiving.
The nets are an excellent addition to the Club’s facilities and much credit is due to Fergal Hehir and Eoghan O’Loughlin together with their team of volunteers who took on the project.
The scramble winners were Michael Talty (14), Gerard O’Loughlin and Ray Ward with 23.9 from Bernie O’Halloran, Pat Keane, Thomas Hehir and Robbie Healy on 24.3. The awards for nearest the pin at the fourth and nearest the pin at the sixth were won by Fergal Hehir and Gary Carroll respectively.
In the Thursday open, the winner was Eamonn McMahon (19) 39 points from Conor O’Loughlin (12) 39 points.
The Tuesday Seniors Open, was won by John Moore (14) 42 points from Willie McNamara on (17) 38 points and Pat Forde on (13) 38 points.
In the weekend singles, a golfer of the year event, the winner was Joe Hurley (14) 67nett from Shane Considine (14) 68 nett and Sean McMahon (10) 68 nett.
The annual club fundraiser will take place on this Saturday and Sunday. this is a team of four event and a timesheet will operate telephone 065 7084198.
There was a big turnout for the captain’s (Gary Carroll) prize to the ladies at Spanish Point last Sunday when the winner was Val Shannon (8) with a score of 69 nett followed by Aoife O’Malley (14) on 72 nett and Evelyn Kelly (24) on a similar score.
Breda Murphy was the winner of the 18-hole weekly competition on a score of five up.

Kilkee

In the member’s cup at Kilkee, Jim Leyden (17) with 60 was the leading qualifier and he had six strokes to spare over Eddie Price with Frank Murnane third on 67 followed by Seán Óg O’Connaire on a similar score.
In the semi-finals O’Connaire beat Leyden and Murnane accounted for Price to qualify for the final.
In the weekly singles, Martin Leyden was the winner with 43 points from John McGuire on 40 and Sean Minihan on 40.

Portumna

Martin Kennedy and Cyril Lowry were the winners in the opening fourball competition of open week at Portumna with 45 points from Laurence Smith and Barry Davis who scored 44 points. In third spot were Pat Mulvihill and Adrian Hynes with 43 points followed by James O’Meara and Mike Coughlan with 42 points. John and Sean Cleary won the gross with 38 points.
In the singles competition on Monday, Ronan O’Meara was the winner with 43 from Mark Walsh on a similar score. Niall Concannon was third with 41 points and John Harte won the gross with 29 points.
PJ Starr won the seniors competition, played over 14 holes, with 33 points from Daithí Frawley on 32 points
In the nine-hole Vincent Treacy was the winner with 22 points from Tom Moloney with the gross prize being won by Shane McHugo on 17 points.
The mixed foursomes beat Mountbellew in a closely contested match last Wednesday evening and this has put them through to play Loughrea in the Zone Final. The ladies won their round of the Miele competition last Sunday evening when they beat Athenry.
The U-15s will take place in Westport on this Friday in Westport.
The Connacht Close for U-13, U-15 and U-17 competitors is in Portumna at the end of July,
As part of the outdoor festival and open week, the club will host a Barbecue on this Saturday July 3.

Gort

Last weekend’s singles Stableford competition at Gort was won by Gerry O’Donnell with 41 points from Michael Donnelly on 38, Kevin Lally on 365 and Gerry Donaldson on 36. John Whealan was the gross winner with 29 points.
Last week’s open singles winner was John O’Sullivan with 38 points from Adrian Conway who had a similar score. Colm Clinton was third with 36 points followed by Ian Price on 34. Ronan Higgins won the gross.
Last week’s ladies competition winner was Maureen Brennan with 36 points from Ann Kerins on 35.
There will be an 18-hole singles Stableford competition this weekend for men while, this week, the ladies will play for club captain’s (Bernard Gillane) prize.

Clare teachers

The Clare Teachers captain’s (Seamus Frehill) prize was played for last week and Sean Daly captured the honours with 42 points.
The win completed a great year for the society treasurer as it also confirmed his win in the golfer of the year competition
He won the captain’s prize by a point from Conor Murphy with Martin Mason in third spot with 39 points followed by Sean Cleary on 38, Mike Kelly on 37, Jim McMahon on 36 and Seamus Hanrahan on 36.
The nines were won by Joe Brady with 20 points and Donal Vaughan with 18 points while the category winners were Michael Kilmartin with 36 points, Fintan McEvoy with 35 and Mary Glynn with 29 points.
The winner of the ladies golfer of the year title is Kathleen Frehill.
The outing was followed by the AGM of the society when Peter Quinn was elected as the new captain. Joan Murphy is the new secretary with Sean Daly filling the role of society treasurer.
The first fixture of the new season will take place to Gort on Saturday, September 11.

Cranny-Coolmeen

Cranny Coolmeen society had their fourth outing of the year in East Clare on Saturday last in ideal weather conditions. The society also visited Waterford on the previous weekend for three golf outings on consecutive days. Michael McMahon was the outright winner.
In East Clare, the winners of the team event were Tom Coffey, Chrissie Markham, Agnes and Pat Shannon with 87 points from John Seery, John Kennelly and Michael Daly on 84 points. In third spot were Michael McMahon, Denis Cahill and John McNeilus with 82 points.
The winner of the guest prize was Justin Griffin.

Pitch and putt

The national gents pitch and putt stroke play competition qualifier was held at the Clare Road on Sunday. Marty Fawl and James Cooley were the winners in the senior section. Ger Hanrahan won the intermediate title while Denis Mc Elligott won the junior section.
In the Munster qualifier, Declan Sheedy and Kenneth Kerin won the senior section, Ger Hanrahan won the intermediate and Gabriel Kerin won the junior section.
The Dormer Cup will be played for on Sunday.
