Will Davy stay or will he go?

DAVY Fitzgerald will take some time to decide whether or not he will seek another term as manager of the Waterford senior hurlers.

Photograph by John KellyIn charge for the last three championships, his term is now up and it’s expected that he will meet with Waterford County Board officials to discuss the future over the coming weeks.
Speaking after Sunday’s loss to Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final, Fitzgerald was full of praise for the squad. “I have worked with a great bunch of players here,” he said.
The Sixmilebridge man was, naturally, very disappointed with Sunday’s result. Waterford had gone into the game with high hopes of causing a surprise and winning through to play their neighbours Kilkenny in the final but they failed to match the all-round balance of Tipperary.
The Waterford forward line struggled throughout, with the exception of John Mullane, who played his heart out. However, lack of support proved a huge problem for him.
At the other end of the field, centre-back Michael Brick Walsh didn’t manage to dominate as he has been doing all season. Indeed, credit for this must go to the Tipperary backroom team, whose decision to play Noel McGrath at centre-forward proved to be a massive stroke. The 19-year-old contributed five points from play as he caused all sorts of problems for a Waterford defence that was under pressure throughout.
Indeed, the Tipperary attack in general caused a lot of problems for their opponents and McGrath received huge support from Lar Corbett, John O’Brien and team captain Eoin Kelly, who scored two goals in the second half to kill off any hopes the Déise outfit might have had of getting back into contention.
Whatever the former Clare star decides with regard to his future with Waterford, there is little doubt sthat he will be involved in management.
The college GAA season will get underway again shortly and for the past number of years he has taken charge of the Limerick IT team, leading them to a Fitzgibbon Cup title a few years ago.
When the disappointment of Sunday’s defeat wears off, the three-time All-star goalkeeper will be back on the sidelines with college, club and county sides. Whether or not he will be returning to Walsh Park, Fraher Field, Ballyduff and other venues in Waterford remains to be seen.
