Victory brings St Joseph’s closer to semi-final


St Joseph’s  2-12   Scariff 1-8
ST Joseph’s kept up their challenge for a semi-final spot with this win over Scariff in Division 2A at Gurteen on Saturday.

 

A goal from a penalty by corner-back Marty O’Regan helped the Doora-Barefield side to lead at half-time on a score of 1-7 to 0-3.
Missing a number of first choice players from their championship line-up from the previous week, Scariff struggled to threaten the winner’s defence. At the other end of the pitch, all of the St Joseph’s forwards got on the scoresheet.
Noel Brody was the winner’s second-half goalscorer when he somehow managed to kick the ball over the goal line. Substitute Shane McMahon scored Scariff’s goal.

Kilmaley  0-17   Broadford 2-11
BROADFORD came from being seven points in arrears in the closing stages of this tie to snatch a share of the spoils and maintain their unbeaten run in this season’s competition.
Mark Moloney and substitute, Kieran O’Connell, were the goalscorers for the East Clare side on a day when the home team will be disappointed that they didn’t take all points on offer.
Kilmaley were in command inside the final quarter when Anthony Cahill failed to capitalise on a goal opportunity. Broadford launched a counter-attack and goaled at the other end and this score inspired them to a strong finish which earned them the draw.

Éire Óg  1-21   Ballyea  0-9
EIGHTEEN months after they met in a relegation battle, which Ballyea won with a last-minute goal to send the Ennismen crashing down to intermediate, Éire Óg hit back with this comprehensive win at their own venue on Saturday.
The winners dominated from the start and were well on the road to the points by the mid-point of the tie when they were 1-11 to 0-6 in front, the goal coming from Damian McMahon.

Corofin  1-9   Tubber 1-9
NORTH Clare neighbours Corofin and Tubber shared the spoils in this tie played at Corofin on Saturday.
For the home side, there was a huge improvement on their championship form of the previous week when they were heavily beaten by Crusheen.
They led by two points at half-time and doubled this to four in the second half but a strong final quarter from Tubber earned them a draw on a day when Kevin Heagney scored the Corofin goal. An area of concern for the home side is the fact that they managed just two scores from play.
David O’Donoghue was the goalscorer for Tubber who threatened to dominate the tie at times.

Ennistymon  2-15   Ogonnelloe 3-10
WHEN visitors Ogonnelloe struck for three goals inside the opening 10 minutes in this Division 2B tie at Ennistymon on Saturday, few would have give the home side much hope of winning.
Enter county minor Cathal Malone who dashed back from playing in a challenge game with Clare and he was introduced early in the second quarter. It proved to be a vital decision as he went on to score 1-10 which played a huge part in his side’s victory.
In addition to Malone, Tommy Hogan scored 1-3 for his side while others to impress were Tadhg Malone, Michael A Devitt and Michael Nestor.

FEAKLE earned the bragging rights when they pipped their neighbours Killanena in this Division 2B tie played at Killanena on Sunday.
Ahead by a point at half-time when the score was 0-6 to 0-5, they held that advantage to the finish on a day when Gary Guilfoyle converted four line ball efforts, three from distances of around 50m.
The winning point came from a 65’ in the final minute which was converted by Raymond Bane.

A BLISTERING start which yielded a brace of goals from John Punch helped Ruan to this narrow win over Sixmilebridge on Sunday.
The goals helped the winners into a 2-4 to 0-1 win at the end of the first quarter but Sixmilebridge battled back and when the half-time whistle sounded the gap was down to two.
The second half was a close affair with the winners managing to hold onto the two-point margin to the final whistle.

LEADERS Smith O’Brien’s maintained their place at the top of the Division 2B table with this bit win over Clarecastle on Sunday.
The Killaloe side dominated throughout and were nine points clear at half-time when the score was 0-12 to 0-3.
The game’s only goal came in the second half when Anthony O’Sullivan was on target. Nine different players shared in the winner’s tally.
