Valuable points for Shannon Olympic

Corofin Harps 2
Shannon Olympic A 3

Shannon Olympic A continued their fine start to the First Division League with a win away to league leaders Corofin Harps on Sunday morning.

This game turned out to be quite an entertaining encounter, with both teams trying to play attractive football.
The visitors got off to a great start and got an early goal in the eighth minute with Ray Quigley collecting the ball just outside the Corofin box and curling a lovely effort past the keeper, Michael Heath, to the bottom right-hand corner of the net.
This gave the Shannon men confidence and they continued to pressurise the home side and in the 16th minute they doubled their lead when captain Jason Regan tapped in from close range, following a George Justice centre.
Olympic piled forward and should have added to their tally on 21 minutes when Karl Scott rounded the keeper and drove wide after he was sent free by a clever Jason Regan pass.
In the 23rd minute Jason Regan had another goal-bound shot cleared off the line and in the 38th minute Heath produced a good save to deny Karl Scott.
Corofin finally created a significant chance in the 40th minute when Olympic keeper Gary McGettrick, had to save smartly from their danger man, Roberto Pinto.
Olympic got the second half off to a brilliant start on 46 minutes when inspirational captain Jason Regan produced a moment of brilliance. Picking up the ball in a central location, 35 yards from the Corofin goal, Regan strode forward and drove an unstoppable shot to the top left-hand corner.
With the game at 3-0, there looked to be no way back for Corofin but in the 48th minute they were handed a lifeline when the referee ruled that Olympic midfielder Donncadh Kelly had fouled Corofin man Jason Tierney in the box. Unfortunately for Corofin, centre-half John Keane drove the ball over the bar from the penalty spot.
Corofin raised their game and Keane almost made up for his miss when he headed over from six yards in the 50th minute.
Olympic penalty culprit Kelly almost added to the away side’s tally in the 56th minute when he had a fine effort cleared off the Corofin line.
In the 61st minute Corofin finally had some reward when their skilful Brazilian forward, Pinto, took advantage of a poorly placed defensive wall and drove a fine free-kick from 25 yards to the bottom right corner of McGettrick’s goal.
The home side went in search of another goal but Olympic’s defence held firm and Corofin were lucky not to go further behind when Olympic’s midfielder Greg Keane headed just over from a Scott corner in the 80th minute.
Just two minutes later Corofin were awarded another penalty by the referee. This time, Damien Ryan took the kick and he made no mistake.
Corofin’s chances of a draw were dealt a fatal blow in the 88th minute when they were reduced to 10 men, with Michael Concannon receiving a red card.
