U-16 title victory for Éire Óg

Éire Óg  3-13 Doonbeg  0-6

LADIES football in Éire Óg received a huge boost following the town side’s comprehensive win over Doonbeg in the U-16D final on Sunday.
A first-half tally of 1-4 from captain Katie Malone, 1-3 from Aisling Darcy and 0-1 from Orla Devitt, along with great defensive play from the back line saw Éire Óg go in at the break leading 2-8 to no score.
Mindful of the fact that Doonbeg would have the advantage of a strong wind in the second half and with memories of their previous encounter, when Doonbeg overcame a large deficit to beat them, the Éire Óg girls hit the ground running from the throw-in.
Orla Devitt kicked off the scoring with a great point. Doonbeg replied with a point of their own. The game ebbed and flowed, with Aisling Darcy notching up a further 1-2, Katie Malone pointing two frees and Doonbeg scoring five more points.
The game was not as one-sided as the scoreline would suggest and only great defensive play from the Éire Óg back line of Clare Chadda, Aoife Sheehan, Sophie Hanna, Deirbhile Ryan, Rae Wall and Dearbhile Casey kept the West Clare side at bay. The expertise of goalie, Aoife O’Neill, was called upon on several occasions.

Éire Óg: Aoife O’Neill, Rae Wall, Dearbhile Casey, Deirbhile Ryan; Sophie Hanna, Clare Chadda, Aoife Sheehan; Rebecca Crowe, Orla Devitt; Aisling Haran, Claire McMahon, Nicole Burns; Sarah Cullinan, Katie Malone, Emma Duffy, Aisling Darcy, Elana Bradley.
Mentors: Mick Haran, Deirdre O’Doherty, Tom Sheehan and Sharon Malone.
