MANY Clare people will make their way to the City of the Tribes this week and next for the Galway Arts Festival.

Speaking to The Clare Champion, Róisín Sullivan pointed out some of this year’s musical highlights. “Musically, we have the Big Top gigs again this year so we Glen Hansard and The Frames as well as Damien Dempsey. That’ll be a big one, it’s a double bill. It’s a big thing for Glen to be playing with The Frames again. We also have Josh Ritter and Mick Flannery and they have the West Cork Ukulele Orchestra supporting them. Grizzly Bear is another big one and The Stripes are supporting them.”

There are also a lot of highlights in terms of drama over the course of the festival. “We have Northlight Theatre Company from Chicago and a play called Stella and Lou. It’s written by Bruce Graham who would have written The Outgoing Tide, which we had last year and was sold out. There’s the same director as well, BJ Jones.

“We have a particularly great dance show this year,  The Rite of Spring and Petrushka by Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre Company. They are from Ireland but this would be the only time you can see it here, because they travel the world with it. It’s choreographed and directed by an Irish man called Michael Keegan Dolan.

“There’s another great play called Mies Julie. It’s written and directed by Yael Farber and it’s set in South Africa 18 years after the end of apartheid. Its supposed to be absolutely stunning, it has had five star reviews from everywhere, it’s selling really fast as well.”

Howie the Rookie, featuring Tom Vaughan Lawlor of Love/Hate fame, is another highlight and was quickly sold out.
The festival is a huge fillip to the city, giving it a boost last year of close to €20 million.
