Title holders are knocked out

Car Tourismo Banner

There were a number of surprises in the second round of the Clare Junior Cup last Sunday, not least the defeat of title holders Rineanna Rovers by Burren United in Doolin.

Cratloe Forest and Sporting Ennistymon maintained their recent good form, with victories away to Kilrush Rangers and Tulla United A.
Manus Celtic A and B teams progressed to round three with wins over Kildysart Celtic and Connolly Celtic respectively but for Tulla United it was a disappointing day as both of their sides bowed out of the title race, going down by the same margin, 4-0.
Newmarket Celtic, Bridge Celtic A, Bunratty A, Hermitage A and Lifford all had their expected wins but Bridge United A are out of the race having gone under to Rock Rovers, winner of the title two years ago.
The draw for round three will take place on Friday evening.

Cratloe dominated the early exchanges of a high-scoring game, which needed extra time to separate the sides.  The south-east Clare outfit took the lead after 15 minutes through Pádraig Chaplin but then the home side took control and they scored three times in 10 minutes to jump into a 3-1 lead.
Robert Carey scored their first two, the first from a free kick and Trevor Clancy had their third from the penalty spot.
Cratloe came storming back, helped by some defensive blunders of the home side. Patrick O’Halloran scored their second and they drew level just before half-time when Pádraig Chaplin struck again, this time from the penalty spot after David Quinn was fouled, to leave the score at 3-3 at half-time.
Kilrush went back in front when Brian Harte found the net in the third quarter but inside the last 10 minutes, Chaplin completed his hat-trick for the visitors and tied up the match for the third time, leaving the score at 4-4, which was the position at full-time.
Cratloe struck twice in the first period of extra time when Seán Hayes and Damian Browne netted and these goals sealed the side’s place in the last 16 of the competition.

Bridge United A  2   Rock Rovers  3
Having fought back from being two goals behind, Bridge United will rue a lapse in concentration that cost them the opportunity to take this tie to extra time. Rock led at the break thanks to a Niall McNevin strike and they doubled their advantage on 60 minutes when Cathal O’Sullivan was on target.
Bridge looked dead and buried until the 80th minute when Greg Deegan’s sublime through ball was picked up by substitute Billy Maxwell, who squared to Derek Fahy to reduce the deficit. Five minutes later it was all-square when the Rock Rovers keeper failed to deal with Stephen Stewart’s free-kick and Fahy was again sharpest to react to stab home the equaliser. It looked like the tie would be heading to extra-time but deep into injury time a cross from the right was headed home by McNevin to put the 2008 cup winners into the last 16.

Newmarket Celtic A  5   Cooraclare Celtic  2
Cooraclare took a shock lead when they won an aerial tussle and the ball was sent across the centre for Barry Lynch to tuck it away.  Stung by this early reverse, Newmarket hit three before half-time through Eoin Hayes and a brace from John Paul Healy.
Cooraclare, strongly challenging for the third division title, didn’t throw in the towel and they hit back to narrow the deficit when Paul Murphy headed in a corner kick. Despite their best efforts, the equaliser never came and the big finish came from Newmarket as they added two more from Mike O’Malley and Seamus Considine to seal their place in the last 16.

Bridge United B  3   Rineanna Rovers B  1
Barry Downes, Robert Conlon and Gavin Downes were the goalscorers as Bridge United B were made fight all the way by a spirited Rineanna Rovers B side in this cup game on Sunday.
In a first half, with very little quality on show, both hosts and visitors struggled to create any clear-cut chances. Just before the break, Rineanna took the lead when David Dunne capitalised on some uncertainty in the Bridge defence. Bridge played with much more urgency in the second half and almost equalised on 46 minutes when Jamie Gorman’s cross fell to half-time substitute Trevor Kearney, whose shot was well parried by the keeper. Bridge equalised on 60 minutes through a Barry Downes penalty following a Rovers’ hand ball and they took the lead 15 minutes later when a Gavin Downes cross was guided home by Robert Conlon.
Rineanna almost equalised but Barry Deasy brought off an impressive save for the home side. However, in the closing stages, Conlon’s cross from the right was brilliantly headed goalwards by Kearney. His header was tipped on to the crossbar but fell invitingly for Gavin Downes to tap home.

Tulla United B  0   Avenue United A  4
Avenue United A justified being favourites when accounting for Tulla United B in this cup tie at the Cragg on Sunday.

Tulla United A  0   Sporting Ennistymon  4
Sporting Ennistymon caused something of an upset when defeating an in-form Tulla United A side on Sunday morning. The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges and took the lead after 15 minutes with a goal to grace any game. With his back to goal and the ball drifting by him Noel Mullane executed the perfect bicycle kick to stun the home team. This goal separated the sides at the interval.
Playing with a stiffening breeze, Tulla came more into the game in the second half but 15 minutes in, Ennistymon went two up when a defender headed into his own net under pressure from Paudie Fahy.
With 15 minutes to go, Tulla’s chance to get back into this game disappeared when Shane Keane turned a Tulla penalty kick onto his left-hand post and the danger was cleared. With the home side pushing forward, Paudie Fahy beat his marker before rounding the keeper to score. With five minutes to go John McInerney hit a great through ball to Noel Mullane, who calmly scored his second and Sporting Ennistymon’s fourth.
