Six Clare restaurants make top 100 in prestigious guide

SIX Clare restaurants feature in Ireland’s top 100 according to one of the country’s most prestigious dining guides. Assembled by renowned food critics John and Sally McKenna, The Sunday Times’ annual list of Ireland’s best restaurants looks entirely to the north of Clare for the Banner county’s best dining experiences. The six included on the list are Ash @ Pots, Gregans Castle Hotel, Kilshanny House, Oar, Vaughan’s Anchor Inn and Wild Honey Inn. Joy for Clare tourism businesses with prestigious awards

AFTER a fraught and difficult 18 months for the hospitality industry, a number of tourism businesses in Clare were celebrating this week after landing prestigious national awards. Four local outfits were cited in the Georgina Campbell Irish Food Hospitality awards, while a north Clare hotel’s sustainability leadership was acknowledged at the Chambers Ireland Awards. This year’s Georgina Campbell winners were concentrated in the north and west of the county with Hazelwood Lodge, Gregan Castle Hotel, both Ballyvaughan, The Wild Honey Inn, Lisdoonvarna, and Vaughan’s Anchor Inn, Liscannor, winning prizes in their categories. Hotel Doolin, meanwhile, won the Excellence in Environment Award from Chambers Ireland. Hazelwood Lodge, Ballyvaughan, scooped the B&B of the year, with the citation stating there was a big welcome, genuine hospitality and a great sense of generosity about the place. Michelin Success for Clare Chefs

History was made this week when a North Clare pub secured its first Michelin Star, the first public house to receive the accolade in the country. The Wild Honey Inn, in Lisdoonvarna owned and run by prominent chef Aidan McGrath and his partner Kate Sweeney was awarded a Michelin Star in the 2018 Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland earlier this week. This wasn’t the only Clare success at the awards event, as Sixmilebridge woman, and head chef at the Five Fields restaurant in Chelsea, London Marguerite Keogh retained the Michelin star she received last year at the same event. The Wild Honey Inn has been a Michelin Bib Gourmand holder since 2010 and becomes the only newcomer to join what is now an 11-strong list of Michelin Star restaurants in the Republic of Ireland. Lisdoonvarna pub shortlisted for Bar of the Year

The Wild Honey Inn has been shortlisted as the only Clare finalist in this year’s Bar of the Year Awards. The bar has been nominated in two categories; Munster Bar of the Year and Best Modern Irish Cooking in a Bar. The Bar of the Year Awards celebrate excellence in the industry and are dedicated to raising the profile of pubs and reminding consumers of the service and quality that exists within the licensed trade. The gastro-pub has won a range of awards in recent years including ones from Georgina Campbell and John and Sally McKenna and the Michelin Bib Gourmand. An expert panel of industry professionals, training and service experts and food and tourism representatives judge the competition. Award winners will be announced at an event in Dublin on Tuesday, October 28 from 6.30pm.
