Motorists urged to avoid Corbally Road due to mains repairs

HOUSEHOLDS in South East Clare remain without water as Irish Water carry out essential works to repair a burst water main which has affected the water supply in the Shannon Banks, Westbury and Ardnacrusha area. The local authority is now advising motorists of traffic congestion due to the unplanned works being undertaken by Irish Water to resolve the issue. Homes and businesses in the locality were affected by disruptions to their water supply and reduced water pressure on the Mill Road, Corbally Road, Irish Estates, Shannon Banks, Westbury and outwards to Barrys Cross and surrounding areas. Works have an estimated completion time of 2pm. However this afternoon Limerick City and County Council said that water is not expected to return to the area until 7pm this Tuesday evening. Water problems in ‘Bridge and Cratloe

A NUMBER of councillors expressed anger at problems in the water supply around Sixmilebridge and Cratloe, at this week’s Shannon Municipal District meeting. Councillor John Crowe put forward motions asking that the Cappa/Rossmanagher Group Water Scheme and the Castlecrine Group Water Scheme both be taken over by Irish Water. Fianna Fáil Councillor Cathal Crowe asked that the council and Irish Water devise a plan to improve water pressure to the Wood Road in Cratloe. Regarding the Cappa/Rossmanagher scheme, Councillor John Crowe said that people on it have only got “a trickle of water for the last three or four weeks and they have no place to go to try and get this rectified.” He claimed it is “an absolute disgrace” that issues with group water schemes can’t be sorted out. Illustrating the problem with water pressure, he said that people have left water running into a kettle for over three hours without filling it. Independent PJ Ryan said that on …

Garage continuously flooding for five years

A frustrated resident of Flannan’s Terrace, which is close to the Limerick Road cross in Ennis, is threatening to take legal action against Clare County Council over flooding to his garage, which has been ongoing for several years. Jimmy Quinn says the council’s own estimate suggests that broken underground pipes are resulting in the leaking of 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of water daily. He believes the problem emanates from the fact that four nearby rented houses are not connected to the more recently developed water services on the road. “I’ve been on to councillors and officials but nothing has happened. At this stage, I have to go legal about it. A council employee said that they were losing 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of water per day,” Mr Quinn told The Clare Champion on Wednesday. Mr Quinn says the leaks have resulted in it being impossible for him to avail of his garage. He says Clare County Council did initially look …

Middle Eastern Promise for Lissycasey company

by Peter O’Connell A potentially lucrative export market to Bahrain, and possibly the greater Middle East, has opened up for organic water company Clare Spring in Lissycasey, which may lead to the company having to increase its current workforce of 15 full and part-time staff. Clare Spring has been approached by a fledging Bahrain-based firm, Bahsham, whose directors include Kilkee man Tom Byrne and Bahraini national Adel Al Sammak Bahraini, both of whom visited the plant on Monday. “The two of us set up the business with two other partners. Our idea is to import foodstuffs from Europe because organic goes down well in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. We’d be hoping to order one 40-foot container per month. There are 26 pallets per container and each pallet weighs one tonne. We’ll be doing a mixture of glass bottles for hotels and plastic bottles for the shops. We’re also going to supply dispensers. Most of the houses over there have dispensers …

County Council workers cleaning up fallen trees at Kincora Park Ennis.

No power or water

AFTER the storm comes the damage assessment and the clean up in County Clare. Hurricane-like conditions, which swept through the county on Wednesday left a trail of destruction in its wake. Winds gusting up to 160kph brought down power supply lines, uprooted trees, leading to numerous road closures, while slates were ripped from houses and property damaged. At the height of Storm Darwin, the ESB estimated that as many as 20,000 homes and businesses were left without power across the county. The south east of the county was worst affected with power outages reported in Killaloe,  Cratloe, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket, Clarecastle, Tulla, Ennis and other pockets of the county. Despite the fact that ESB Networks crews have been out in force trying to restore power supplies, many of those areas still remain without power. The problems facing many home owners have also been exacerbated, as the knock-on effect of outages was the lack of water supply. Many householders could have to …
