Health campaigners: Ennis is the right place, now is the right time

MEMBERS of the regional health forum for the Midwest are being urged to make the case for the restoration of services at Ennis General, when they meet senior hospital officials next week.  In a statement, the Midwest Hospital Campaign, Clare, outlined that a meeting is to take place next Tuesday (July 19) between the management of University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and forum members representing Clare, Limerick and Tipperary. It follows a unanimous call for the restoration of Emergency Department (ED) services in Ennis, Nenagh and St John’s in Limerick, at the May meeting of the HSE West Regional Health Forum. The request for a follow-up meeting was made by Clare Green Councillor Liam Grant and Tipperary Independent Councillor Séamie Morris. “The Midwest Hospital Campaign Clare calls on all members of the forum to use this opportunity to advance the case to upgrade Ennis Hospital, to a model 3, which would mean the return of  24/7 Emergency Department to the county,” …

Video series highlights skin cancer danger in Clare

THE UL Hospitals’ Group is supporting an initiative to help Clare people reduce the possibility of contracting skin cancer when the intensity of sunburn producing ultraviolet radiation (UV) is greatest, writes Dan Danaher. The Irish Skin Foundation (ISF), Dr Sinead Field, Consultant Dermatologist at University Hospital Limerick, the HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), and the Healthy Ireland SunSmart campaign have joined forces with the group to launched a series of five video animations. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland, with more than 13,000 cases diagnosed annually. This is twice the number compared to 10 years ago, and is projected to more than double again by 2045. Yet, most skin cancers could be prevented. ‘This Christmas has to be different’ health chiefs warn

HSE chiefs in the Midwest have issued a warning over the impact of a possible third wave of Covid-19 on service delivery in the region. “This Christmas has to be different,” Dr Mai Mannix, Director of Public Health in the Midwest told members of the local authority. “The next couple of weeks are so important and will determine what happens in January, which is always tough anyway in terms of healthcare. We are appealing to people to reduce their social contacts immediately. Keep washing your hands and keeping social distance.” Dr Mannix also said there were far too many instances where people were sick and still turning up at work. “This cannot continue,” she said. Professor Brian Lenehan, Chief Clinical Director said that University Limerick Hospitals Group (ULHG) could not rule out having to cancel elective procedures in January.
