ACUTE hospitals in the Mid-West are on the alert for a possible significant surge in Covid-19 cases during the Christmas period due to the increased transmission of the new Omicron variant, writes Dan Danaher. There were 109 new cases of Covid-19 in Clare on Sunday, December 19, 197 in Limerick and 51 in North Tipperary. This compared to 65 new cases in Clare on December 13, 149 in Limerick and 56 in Tipperary. Meanwhile, the 14-day incidence of Covid-19 in Clare has increased slightly from 1,120 per 100,000 on December 13 to 1,133 on December 19. It also went up marginally in Limerick from 913 to 1,024 but fell in Tipperary from 1,441 to 1,322 during the same period. There were 1,331 cases in Clare from November 30 to December 13, 1,780 in Limerick and 2,300 in Tipperary during the same period.   UL Hospitals’ Group vaccinators will continue operating three Walk-In Dose One and Dose Two Vaccine Clinics this weekend, starting from Friday. These clinics are strictly for Dose One and Dose Two vaccines, and should not be attended by anyone seeking a third vaccine dose. The Walk-In Dose One and Dose Two clinics will be held at the Mid-West Covid-19 Vaccination Centres in Ennis Hospital in the former Outpatients’ Department on Friday, November 26, from 4 to 7pm in the Abbey Court Hotel Nenagh on Saturday from 4 to 6pm and in Limerick Racecourse on Sunday, November 28 from 2 to 6pm. Anyone attending a walk-in clinic for a second dose should bring their vaccine record card. A minimum of 21 days must have passed after Pfizer Dose 1 before Dose 2 is administered. The group has revealed the total number of Covid-19 vaccines delivered under the vaccination programme has now exceeded 400,000. These walk-in clinics are strictly for Dose 1 and Dose 2 vaccines, and should not be attended by anyone seeking a third vaccine dose. Walk-in clinics administering Pfizer Dose 1 and 2 will be held at the Mid-West Covid-19 Vaccination Centres in Limerick on Saturday and Sunday, and Nenagh on Sunday.   The Mid-Western Cancer Information and Support Centre at University Hospital Limerick resumed face-to-face on-site appointments on a half-day basis on Monday for the first time since March 2020.   A wide range of face-to-face supports, which had been curtailed during the pandemic, including counselling and relaxation therapies, will now be available Monday to Friday, from 9am-1pm, with safety precautions in place for the protection of all patients and staff.   Dr Denis O’Keeffe, Consultant Haematologist and Director of Cancer Services for UL Hospitals’ Group, said the partial re-opening of the Mid-West Cancer Support Centre was long-awaited and very welcome, enabling the provision of important support and holistic non-clinical therapies for patients and their loved ones.   “In making this partial re-opening, we are, of course, keenly aware of the concerns and risks due to the continued high community transmission of Covid-19. UL Hospitals Group has announced increased access for nominated support partners of patients at University Maternity Hospital Limerick from this Tuesday. With effect from Tuesday morning, nominated support partners will be able to access all three inpatient wards at the hospital, from 8am to 9pm daily. The new measures, being enacted at UMHL are in line with the guidance of the Health Protection Surveillance Committee (HPSC), which was updated on October 21 for implementation on November 1. In the interests of the safety of staff, service users and their support partners, these and all access measures at the hospital continue to be reviewed and risk-assessed in the light of the COVID-19 transmission rate in communities locally, the number of staff in the hospital and the possibility of those healthcare workers becoming unwell, and the infrastructure of the hospital site.   Walk-in vaccination clinics for adults, and children aged 12 and over, are being held in Mid-West Covid-19 Vaccination Centres over the weekend. The clinics will be held in the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh, this Saturday, and in the vaccination centres at Limerick Racecourse and the West County Hotel, Ennis, on Sunday. These local clinics form part of the nationwide effort to maximise uptake for Pfizer Dose 1&2, and to ease access for those people who have received AstraZeneca Dose 1 and who now, as per national guidance, can receive the Pfizer vaccine as their second dose.     VOLUNTEERS are being sought from Clare to help improve services across UL Hospitals’ Group by joining the Patient Council. The Patient Council was established in 2016 and provides an independent voice for patients, service users and their families. It gives patients and members of the public the opportunity to become involved as active partners in UL Hospitals’ Group and advise hospital management on improving patient experience. The council comprises volunteers from the general public as well as members of the hospital management team. It is currently looking to increase the number of public and expressions of interest are sought from people who have had experience of University Hospital Limerick, Ennis Hospital, Nenagh Hospital, Croom Orthopaedic Hospital or University Maternity Hospital Limerick. IN LINE with national guidance on Covid-19, U Hospitals Group is now asking all patients attending its acute hospitals about their vaccination status. The group stated today that the move was to keep all patients and staff in their hospitals safe from Covid infection, as numbers with the virus remains stubbornly high. All patients will receive care and treatment whatever their vaccination status, a spokesperson for UL Hospital said. “Knowledge of vaccination status enables safer management of patients, and assists with contact tracing either in the hospital or afterwards in the community, if a patient comes into contact with a COVID-19 case in any of our hospitals,” UL Hospitals Group Information on the vaccination status of patients in acute hospitals would be determined and recorded, either prior to admission or as soon as possible thereafter.
