Call made to restore Kilrush’s French connection

CALLS are being made to revitalise the inks between West Clare and North Western France, on the 40th anniversary of the Kilrush-Plouzané twinning initiative.  Councillor Ian Lynch proposed that the local authority would reinvigorate the long-standing connection with the Britanny town, which shares historical links to St Senan. The Independent member outlined to the recent meeting of the West Clare Municipal District (WCMD) that the twinning had been established in 1982, under Kilrush Town Council’s auspices. Links between the two towns had been unearthed in the late 1970s by a Breton historian who was looking into the history of Plouzané. The settlement, close to the major French city of Brest, looked at the origin of the name ‘Plouzané’, which means ‘church of Zane’. He then established that Zane was the Irish monk, Senan, whose home was Scattery Island. St Senan established churches in Cornwall and Brittany  “As this would be the 40-year anniversary, now is the right time to reinvigorate the twinning,” …

Ennis in pursuit of Texas twin

Clare County Council is open to considering a new twining link for Ennis, according to a local councillor. Commenting on moves to officially link the county town with Ennis in Texas, USA, Mayor Ann Norton said the normal procedure is to build a relationship with a location before a decision on a more formal arrangement is made by the twinning committee. Ennis is currently twinned with Phoenix, Arizona and an official link with the Lone Star State would open possibilities for new cultural, tourism and business links between County Clare and the US. The possibility of a formal tie-up with the two towns emerged this week after Ronan Bradley from Corofin helped to arrange a visit to council headquarters by Texan County Judge Mark Riley on May 25. Having started a new Facebook page entitled Ireland’s Inner Beauty, Mr Bradley said he is looking forward to Mr Riley’s visit to the Banner County, which he hopes will be the start …

‘Twin’ team gets a taste of ‘Bridge life

THE foundation stones for a twinning arrangement between Sixmilebridge and Nort-sur-Erde were firmly put in place this weekwhen a delegation from the French town, led by their mayor, Yves Dauvé, visited the Clare village. Strong bonds were forged between the two communities after the Sixmilebridge Twinning Committee extended the hand of friendship to the visiting delegation, by treating them to an action-packed weekend of culturally-themed events. The party of 10, led by Mayor Dauvé, arrived on Wednesday evening and were welcomed by the Sixmilebridge Twinning Committee, headed by chairman Gerald McErlain, at a reception in The Mill Bar. Once introductions were made, the parties settled into an informal and relaxed evening, with an exhibition of set dancing by the children attending classes in an adjoining room. A busy itinerary got going early on Thursday morning, when the group was given a guided tour of Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. The richness of the park and castle’s focus on life in …

China twinning needs cost benefit study

A cost benefit analysis should be conducted on a proposed twinning arrangement between Clare and a province in China, according to a local councillor. Councillor PJ Kelly has urged Clare County Council to complete a thorough review on the costs and benefits of sending a delegation to Yuman Province, to prevent members ending up like a “shower of fools”. While Councillor Kelly is not opposed to the council’s bid to explore establishing a new twinning arrangement, he stressed the importance of proper planning and research on what the Chinese like to do when they travel abroad, before a decision is made on the trip. While the Lissycasey councillor admitted that the public may not happy with the cost of the trip, he warned they would be even more dissatisfied if the delegation returned without achieving a defined set of objectives. The council has accepted an invitation from the People’s Republic of China to send a delegation to the country later …
