MILLIONS of people around the world will be reading all about Co Clare, Gaelic games and the art of hurley making – following the visit by travel writers from eight different countries. Invited by Tourism Ireland, the group is made up of journalists from media outlets in Brazil, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, India, New Zealand and Britain. Their itinerary has been designed by Fáilte Ireland to showcase our special national games and give the visiting journalists a flavour of the fast-paced thrill of hurling and the skill of Gaelic games. Their packed programme saw them visit places like Torpey Hurleys Workshop near Sixmilebridge to see John Torpey and his son, Seán demonstrate the art of hurley making followed by a tour of the Michael Cusack Centre in Carron. Hundreds of thousands of people in Scandinavia, and elsewhere around the world, are set to read all about County Clare and the Wild Atlantic Way. Finnish travel blogger, Satu Vänskä-Westgarth is taking on the “challenge of her lifetime” – cycling the entire Wild Atlantic Way, or some 2,500 kms along Ireland’s western seaboard over a five-week period. Satu arrived in Lahinch on Tuesday and will spend the next few days exploring and then blogging about what the area has to offer. She will then travel along the coast to Kilkee before continuing to the South West. Tourism Ireland invited Satu to undertake the marathon cycle, to experience our newest visitor attraction and then inspire her readers and followers to come and discover it for themselves. A major Indian travel TV channel, travelxp HD, has been filming in Clare this week as guests of Tourism Ireland. They were here to record some of the unique experiences that their viewers can enjoy on holiday in this part of Ireland. The travel programme, which will air this autumn, will be seen by more than 10 million viewers across India who have a passion for travel and adventure. During their time in Clare, the crew captured footage at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin Cave and the Burren Smokehouse. They filmed a surfing demonstration in Lahinch, with Ben’s Surf Clinic, and enjoyed an evening of traditional Irish music in Gus O’Connor’s Pub in Doolin. They stayed at The Falls Hotel in Ennistymon. North Clare’s more picturesque spots will be seen by about a million people in a television documentary airing in Germany next month. A crew from ARD, a national German TV network, is in Ireland this week as guests of Tourism Ireland, filming for the documentary along the Wild Atlantic Way. The documentary will be called Weltreisen meaning World Travel. Footage captured in Clare includes the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher, as well as the Weltreisen crew enjoying a surfing demonstration in Doolin. The 45-minute programme will air in July. This year, Tourism Ireland is placing a major focus on the Wild Atlantic Way in its promotions around the world. TWELVE leading tour operators from Russia visited Clare and the West of Ireland last week. Their visit was organised by UK inbound tour operator, Camelot Tours, and supported by Tourism Ireland to help grow Ireland’s share of the rapidly-growing Russian travel market. News of efforts to develop the Russian market comes in a week when it was officially confirmed that North Americans travelled in big numbers to this country. During their time here, the Russians saw many natural attractions, including the Cliffs of Moher, while they also inspected several hotels, among them Dromoland Castle Hotel and Bunratty Castle Hotel.
