President leads tributes to the late great Tony

PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins led the tributes to legendary musician, broadcaster and producer Tony McMahon who has died at the age of 82. The acclaimed accordion player was the son of PJ and Kitty McMahon and grew up in the Turnpike, Ennis. Tony was described as “one of Ireland’s iconic presences among musicians” by President Higgins who noted the “great sadness” of the music community on hearing of his passing. “Tony brought to performance in so many forms, places and venues the talent of a maestro. To hear him play Port Na bPúcai, for example, was to feel transported into another world,” said the president. “His commitment to traditional music and to the friendship of his fellow musicians was full of integrity. “On behalf of Sabina and myself, agus mar Uachtarán na hÉireann on behalf of the people of Ireland, may I send my deepest condolences to Tony’s family and friends, and to the wider music community at home and …

Shannon marks the summer solstice

Few people celebrate the summer solstice these days but a special event will take place in Shannon to mark it this occasion. “Shannon Mental Health Association and SkyCourt Shopping Centre are combining to hold a summer solstice event to promote positive mental health. It’ll be in the Food Court at SkyCourt on Monday, June  from 9pm until around 11.30pm. There will be music and entertainment and refreshment. “The idea is to promote good mental health. The solstice has been identified by Mental Health Ireland nationally so the Shannon branch is having this local event. People will be given cards and they can write their wishes for their mental health and well-being on them for the coming year,” Tony McMahon, PRO of the Shannon Mental Health Association, outlined. Tony added, “It’s a social event, a sort of a get-together, a celebration of mental well-being. Shannon ‘neglected’ as local motor tax office ruled out

By Owen Ryan SHANNON is being neglected, the April meeting of the town council heard. Complaints arose after a letter was sent to the council that ruled out bringing a motor tax service to Shannon. At a previous meeting of the town council, a motion was passed requesting that the county council open a motor tax service locally. However, the letter from the council ruled that out. “Motor tax services are available online at www.motortax.ie. Year-on-year, the county-wide take-up of online motor taxing is growing, with a 46% increase in the proportion of online usage between January 2011 and January 2014. “For the month of January 2014, 13,715 motor tax transactions for County Clare were processed, of which 56% were handled online, with the balance transacted by post or over the counter in Ennis or Ennistymon. “The delivery of motor taxation nationally is currently being reviewed, as part of the national service efficiency reform agenda.
