Cute Kerry hoors do a number on Kilrush

THE Kilrush Tidy Towns Committee may be regretting being so helpful to their counterparts in Listowel, when a delegation from the North Kerry town visited West Clare last spring. The Kerry group arrived in Kilrush, cap in hand, wondering aloud as to the secret behind their hosts’ 2014 win in Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town category. Led by their chairman, Paul Edson, the Kilrush committee were ever so helpful and sang like canaries. Imagine their shock on Monday, when they learned they had been knocked off their perch by none other than Listowel, who improved their 2014 total by 11 points. “We must have given them too much information because they went and dethroned us, the cute hoors,” Paul Edson laughed ruefully. A big clean-up in Clare

The 17th annual National Spring Clean campaign, which ran throughout April and into May, was very well supported in Clare. There were 219 clean-up events in the county, while In total, more than half a million volunteers participated in clean-ups across the country, making 2015 one of the campaign’s most successful years to date. Volunteers from a range of organisations and community groups across Clare joined in the community spirit of National Spring Clean to show just how much they love where they live, including Tidy Towns groups, scouts, youth clubs, environmental and residential associations and schools and colleges.

Council funds for Tidy Towns

Tidy Towns groups have been encouraged to make submissions in relation to Clare County Council’s Public Area Enhancement Scheme 2015. Clare County Council members recently approved an allocation of €100,000 countywide towards the scheme in 2015. Funded entirely from the Council’s own resources, the scheme aims to support community-based projects in towns and villages throughout Clare with a view to enhancing the overall performance of the national Tidy Towns competition. “I am confident this fund will have lasting, positive consequences for the communities who are successful during the funding submission process,” commented Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, John Crowe. Betty Devanny, Tidy Towns co-ordinator, Clare County Council, explained: “The council intends to focus on initiatives that will make a real impact in terms of public area enhancement and particularly where the funding can provide added value or complement another initiative or leverage other funding or support. Ennis targets tidiest town title

LOCAL community group representatives and members of the business community in Ennis gathered in the Old Ground Hotel this week for the launch of an initiative aimed at enhancing the Clare county town’s chances of becoming Ireland’s tidiest town. Ennis Tidy Towns Committee launched its new website, www.ennistidytowns.com, and a community-wide campaign called On The Move To Become Ireland’s Tidiest Town, to help Ennis achieve national success in the 2016 competition. The three-year plan aims to address new criteria of the competition, including waste management and biodiversity. The initiative also features a heavy focus on community involvement and encouraging local residents, community groups and businesses to work together to improve the overall appearance of the town. The first major initiative being undertaken as part of the plan takes place on April 18, when communities will be invited to participate in a large clean-up that is being facilitated by Clare County Council, in conjunction with An Garda Síochána, The Lions Club, Clare …

Learning more about Tidy Towns

Clare County Council has organised a Tidy Towns information and networking evening on Monday next at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis. This third annual event will feature expert advice and a questions and answers session for Tidy Towns groups from across County Clare seeking to improve their score in the 2015 competition. Speakers at the event, starting at 6pm, will include Tom Coughlan, chief executive of Clare County Council; Lorraine Power, environmental consultant and Tidy Towns adjudicator; and Paul Edson, Tidy Towns chairperson in Kilrush, which was named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town in 2014. “This event provides me, in my role as cathaoirleach of Clare, with a real opportunity to acknowledge the positive work that is taking place by these groups in all our towns and villages across the county,” commented Councillor John Crowe. Kilrush named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town

KILRUSH has been named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town in this year’s SuperValu National Tidy Towns competition. The result was announced by Mr. Alan Kelly, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government at the 2014 National SuperValu TidyTowns Awards Ceremony in Dublin. Kilrush was marked against strict adjudication criteria and beat off stiff competition from scores of other small towns throughout Ireland. Other competition winners included Kilkenny City (Tidiest Large Urban Centreand overall winner), Clonegal Co. Carlow (Tidiest Village) and Westport Co. Mayo (Tidiest Large Town). Speaking following the ceremony at The Helix, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Councillor John Crowe said the award success is a tribute to the local community in Kilrush and the work they have carried out improve the appearance of the town. Courtesy and friendliness needed to make Ennis top Tourism Town

Tourism promoters in Ennis are calling on the business community here to treat everyone as if they are a judge in this year’s Tourism Towns and Tidy Towns competitions. Local co-ordinator of the Tourism Towns competition, Teresa McGrath who is also vice -chairperson of Ennis Tidy Towns, explains that Toursm Town competition is a prestigious one, is organised by Failte Ireland on a national basis and is now in its third year. She and her colleagues are urging businesses here to pull out all the stops when it comes to customer service, especially during the months of June and July when the judges will be in the town for Ireland’s Tourism Towns Competition. “Winning the competition would have long-term beneficial effects by way of tourism and social events as everybody knows that a strong tourist industry contributes to the sustainability of towns and villages and to the economic viability of the business community,” she said. “The Tidy Towns competition is …

Tidy Towns advice from Moynalty

THE chairperson of Moynalty Tidy Towns Committee, the overall winner of the 2013 National Tidy Towns competition, will be among the guest speakers at an information gathering of  local Tidy Towns groups this Thursday  in Áras Contae an Chláir. The event is jointly hosted by Clare County Council and Clare Local Development Company (CLDC) and will acknowledge the positive work that Tidy Towns groups are doing across the county, in a voluntary capacity, to enhance the county’s towns and villages. Speakers will include Tom Coughlan, Clare county manager; Lorraine Power, environmental consultant and Tidy Towns adjudicator; Gloria Callinan, projects coordinator, CLDC; and Peter Rogers, chairperson of Moynalty Tidy Towns.
