Golden glow for Ennis and Kilrush in Tidy Towns

Ennis has been named Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre in the 59h annual National Tidy Towns Competition, while Kilrush has joined the counjty town in being awarded a Gold Medal in its category. The result was announced at the 2017 National SuperValu TidyTowns Awards Ceremony at the Helix in Dublin. Ennis was marked against strict adjudication criteria and beat off stiff competition from other large urban centres throughout the country. It’s the seventh time that Ennis has been designated Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre, having won the award in 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016. Ennis was named overall winner of the ‘Gum Litter Task Force’ and ‘Can it’ awards, while the County Capital also picked up a County Award along with Kilrush and Mountshannon. Lisdoonvarna won an Endeavour Award and Bronze Medals were awarded to Quin, Ballynacally, Ballyvaughan and Tuamgraney. Ennis Tidy Towns’ wild biodiversity plan

ENNIS Tidy Towns has gone ‘wild’ about biodiversity. The local organisation launched its Wild About Ennis Biodiversity Plan for 2017- 2019 last Friday in the Gordon Drive Community Garden. Mayor of Ennis Ann Norton officially launched the plan with members of the local community in Cloughleigh, Chamber CE Scheme, who manage the Garden, Department of Social Protection, Ennis Chamber, Clare County Council and students from Cloughleigh Primary School in attendance. This community-led plan was developed with the support of local individuals and community groups through online questionnaires and two dedicated workshops. Ennis Tidy Towns also invited groups from throughout the county to assist with the development of the plan, thereby ensuring many of the ideas and skills learned during the process were distributed around the county. “We look forward to implementing this ambitious plan with the help of the local community as well as local stakeholders, including Clare County Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service and Inland Fisheries Ireland.It also …

Community groups ready to bloom again

Tidy Towns groups, development associations, community groups and residents associations accross the county have been invited to compete in the Clare in Bloom Competition 2017. The annual competition is a motivational mechanism for local groups to enhance the visual impact of their settlements by means of flower, tree and shrub planting. Cash prizes for the purpose of furthering projects in the local community will be awarded to category winners at Clare County Council’s awards ceremony in October. Sponsorship is this year being provided by ESB Moneypoint and Roche Ireland, with matching funding from the council. The award criteria for the competition include visual impact, range of planting, litter control and waste management, community involvement, energy initiatives and overall impression. The competition is based on three population categories. Category 1 caters for towns and villages with a population in excess of 700, Category 2 is for population centres of between 300 and 700 people and Category 3 features villages with a …

Council publishes tree guide

Clare County Council has published a new reference guide for organisations, community groups and Tidy Towns groups involved in planting trees towns and villages across County Clare. The new publication is part of Clare County Council’s contribution to National Tree Week 2017, which starts on Sunday. The aim of the County Clare Tree Design Guide for Towns and Villages is to promote the importance of trees, inspire people to plant more trees, demonstrate where to plant trees and inform on how, which and when to plant trees. The guide is for anyone planting trees in towns and villages in Clare and offers advice on planting the right tree in the right place. It sets out to help people to avoid the expense of having to heavily prune or remove trees planted in inappropriate locations in urban areas. Ennis tidiest large urban centre

ENNIS has been pipped by a single point for the overall title of Ireland’s Tidiest Town 2016. With a total of 326 points, up five from last year, Ennis won the Tidiest Large Urban Centre title, but the award for the Tidiest Large Town and the overall title of Ireland’s Tidiest Town was won by Skerries in County Dublin with 327 points, an improvement of six points on last year’s. Birdhill, County Tipperary, claimed the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Village, while Listowel, County Kerry, received the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town for the second year. A total of 859 towns and villages throughout the country entered this year’s SuperValu National TidyTowns competition. The awards were announced today (Monday) at The Helix in Dublin. Information evening on Tidy Towns

A Tidy Towns Information evening will take place this evening (Tuesday) from 5.30pm in the council chamber at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis . The event is hosted by Clare County Council and will acknowledge the positive work that Tidy Towns groups are doing across the County, in a voluntary capacity, to enhance the County’s towns and villages. Speakers will include cathaoirleach James Breen; chief executive Tom Coughlan, Tidy Towns adjudicator Lorraine Power, Doonbeg Tidy Towns Chairperson Tommy Comerford, Clarecastle Tidy Towns Chairperson Christy Leyden, and Billy Flynn, ecologist and biodiversity expert. The evening will conclude with a questions and answers session which will enable groups to raise issues in relation to Tidy Towns generally with particular emphasis on the Tidy Towns competition.

Council workshops on Tidy Towns

Clare County Council environment section has organised a series of workshops in Ennis, Scariff and Miltown Malbay to assist community groups with the Sustainable Waste & Resource Management category of the national SuperValu Tidy Towns competition. While the workshops have been developed to assist Tidy Towns groups, Clare County Council is also encouraging individuals, business, schools and community groups to attend and learn how to become involved in local environmental awareness projects or initiatives within their community. The upcoming workshops, which are supported through the Department of Environment’s Local Agenda 21 Fund, the EPA Local Authority Prevention Network and the Southern Region Waste Management Office, are free of charge. The first themed workshops – entitled ‘Tidy Towns: Promoting a more Sustainable Community’ – will take place at McNamaras Bar in Scariff from 11.00am to 12.30pm on January; Whitestrand Lifesaving Training Centre in Miltown Malbay from 11.00am to 12.30pm on January 27 and Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis from 7.00pm …
