Clare U20 hurlers take on Treaty in Championship bow

Championship season has rolled around quickly, with the U-20 hurlers first into the breach for Clare on Wednesday in a new-look structure. Having been the last bastion of traditional knock-out fare since it inception almost 60 years ago (albeit predominantly U-21), a new group format has pitted the Banner in with last year’s finalists Cork and Limerick, with the Rebels actually aiming for a provincial and All-Ireland three-in-a-row not achieved since Clare in 2014. More significantly, the Banner’s group rivals are also the last two Munster minor winners, with Limerick claiming provincial honours in 2019 & ’20 while Cork brushed aside all challengers last season to canter to All-ireland silverware. “The standard is very high in this age group and Cork and Limerick are probably in the top three in the country,” admits Terence Fahy who manages the Clare U-20’s alongside Whitegate club-mate and two-time All Star Brendan Bugler as well as his St Joseph’s Tulla Harty Cup winning mentor …

St Joseph’s Tulla carry Clare hopes into Harty quarters

Tulla aiming to clinch Munster title

A HUGE East Clare will journey to Ballyagran this Saturday for the Munster Colleges Senior B Hurling Championship final, in which St Joseph’s, Tulla will face CBC from Cork at 3pm. Beaten finalists in 2013, Tulla reached the quarter-final last year where they lost out to Newport, who were then beaten in the semi-final. In the 2013 final, the East Clare side were unlucky to go out to Dungarvan CBS at Golden after extra time. The majority of that Dungarvan side were part of the Waterford colleges side that won the Harty Cup title that same year. This season’s captain, Evan McMahon, along with his Feakle clubmates, Con Smith, Stephen Conway and Martin Daly, and Broadford’s Darren Chaplin, played in that final and they will be hoping that the experience they have gained in the past two campaigns will be a key factor in helping them to get over the line this week.
