Quin Taekwon-do Club back to winning ways at the Irish Cup

IT IS a very busy time for Quin Taekwon-do head coach Stephen Ryan as his Team Ireland members prepare for the European Championships in Spain next week and he reflects on his club’s success at last weekend’s Irish Cup in the University of Limerick (UL) Sports Arena. Six of the club’s black belts will join a 60-strong Irish squad when they travel to La Nucia, Spain, for the long-awaited return to international competition. Experienced competitors Shane Tuite (-70kg senior sparring); James Tuite ( -68kg junior sparring); Alice Larkin (2nd Degree Patterns and –68kg senior sparring) and Luke Moriarty (-70kg senior sparring) will be joined by Aoibhin Copeland (- 55kg junior sparring) and David Larkin (1st Degree Patterns and –50kg junior sparring), who have been selected to the Irish team for the first time. “It’s been great but challenging to be back training for the Euros with this group of athletes,” said Stephen, who is also Head Coach of the Irish …

Clare golfers to tee off in LA Special Olympics

TWO Clare-based athletes are busy preparing for the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles next July. Seventy-two-year-old Patrick Rutherford is very excited to have been selected as a playing partner for 29-year-old Paul Kirrane from Ennis. Apart from being “shocked and surprised” at being selected for the games, Patrick is also “very happy”. “At my age it is marvelous,” he said. With seven centrally planned events, Patrick won’t be taking his foot off the pedal and will be training four times a month at Ennis Golf Club. Not content with just playing golf, which he has been doing for over 25 years, Patrick also enjoys triathlons and athletics. When he’s not on the golf course or completing triathlons, widower Patrick is kept busy with his family of two sons and six grandchildren. Three Clare athletes make Transplant Team Ireland

THREE Clare athletes will travel to Krakow, Poland next month as part of Transplant Team Ireland in the eight European Transplant and Dialysis Sports Championships. Kidney transplant recipients Marie O’Connor from Moynore North, Lahinch and Eoghan O’Neill from Granaham, Newmarket on Fergus together with former international tennis table player of the 80s, Mary Sheehan from Ballykeelaun, Parteen are looking forward to participating in the games. Marie joined some other members of the 34 strong Irish team for a motivational talk with Dublin football manager Jim Gavin last weekend. Marie O’Connor will be competing in the 50-59 age category in field long jump, 100m and 200m race, 4 x 100m relay race, Petanque doubles and golf. Eoghan O’Neill will compete in the 30-39 age category in golf, swimming – freestyle 50m, freestyle relay 4 x 50m, swimming medley relay 4 x 50m, track and field in 200m race and 4 x 100m relay while Mary Sheehan, in the 50-59 years age …
