Timely goals propel Flannan’s to Munster football glory

Eoin Brennan watched timely goals powered St Flannan’s College to a 5-10 to 3-7 defeat of St Francis Rochestown (Cork) in the Munster Under 15A Post-Primary Schools Football Championship Final SAINT Flannan’s produced an emphatic start to the Munster Post-Primary Schools Championships when firing five timely goals past St Francis Rochestown to cement the Under 15A Football honours for the first time in five years in Ballyagran, Limerick on Tuesday afternoon. Carving out a 3-6 to 0-2 half-time cushion after goals from St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield duo Graham Ball (2) and Leon Talty, the Ennis school would actually power 17 points clear by the two-thirds mark before their Cork opponents finally found their feet. A backlash was inevitable but perhaps a little too close for comfort as St Flannan’s cushion was slahsed to just eight after a 2-3 unanswered blitz that included goals for chief threats Ciaran Fitzgerald and Cillian Murphy. A 53rd minute goal for Luke Vaughan finally clinched the …

Council’s ‘serious reservations’ over proposed €25m hospital site

CLARE County Council has expressed “serious concerns” that a €25m HSE plan for an elderly care unit on Church-owned lands at St Flannan’s College in Ennis may prejudice the future expansion of the secondary school. Putting the project on hold, the Council has sent a Further Information (FI) request to the HSE to state that it has serious concerns that the proposed development particularly on lands zoned community may prejudice the future expansion of the school. The loss of “ancillary required sports/recreational grounds” and the potential removal of a number of mature trees on the site have been highlighted. In its request for further information, the Council has stated that it has concerns in relation to the potential overbearing impact of the proposal on existing dwellings in the vicinity. As a result, the Council has asked the HSE to relocate or redesign the proposed building so that greater separation distances are maintained. The local authority has also expressed concern over …

Flannan’s storm into Munster U15A football final

Eoin Brennan watched St Flannan’s College produce a powerful finish to defeat St Brendan’s College, Killarney 1-12 to 1-7 in the Munster Under 15A Post-Primary Schools Football Championship Semi-Final CHAMPIONS OF 2017 St Flannan’s produced a storming finish to lower perennial rivals St Brendan’s College on their way to a second consecutive Br. Taft Cup Final in The Bog Garden, Rathkeale on Wednesday afternoon. Having been edged out of last year’s title by a brace of injury-time Tralee CBS points, the Ennis side proved even more resilient this time around, remarkably outscoring their lofty opponents by 1-11 to 1-1 over the final 35 minutes. Such a sea-change was difficult to foresee when despite facing into the conditions, the Kerry side seized full control to soar 0-6 to 0-1 clear by the end of the opening quarter. In essence, St Flannan’s gave their opponents too much space and respect but finally ignited their belief and challenge with a decisive 24th minute …

Former Flannan’s principal objects to €25m plans for school site

AN ex-principal of St Flannan’s College in Ennis has emerged as one of a number of objectors to new plans for a €25m elderly care unit on diocesan owned lands at the college. Last month, the HSE lodged plans for the 100-bed Community Nursing Unit (CNU) on a seven-acre green field site at Clonroadmore at the post primary St Flannan’s College. The hospital is to replace the existing bed capacity at St Joseph’s Hospital in Ennis. The new unit is to contain 75 long-stay and 25 short-stay beds and according to planning documents lodged most residents will have high dependency needs “and a number may also suffer from Alzheimer’s/Dementia”. A total of 11 objections have been lodged against the proposal and in a detailed, hard-hitting objection against the application, Colm McDonagh has told Clare County Council that the proposed CNU “is inappropriate at this location and is not in the best interests of proper planning and development of the area”. …

Warning that planning delays could scupper Ennis community nursing unit

RESIDENTS living close to a new Community Nursing Unit (CNU) proposed for a green-field site close to St Flannan’s College in Ennis voiced concerns over increased traffic and other issues, at a public briefing this week.  Up to ten residents turned up for the briefing which unveiled Health Service Executive (HSE) proposals for the state-of-the-art, 100-bed facility for older people. While residents stressed that they have no objection to the nursing home and appreciate the need for it, many expressed concern over the loss of the green area as well as a potential increase in traffic.  The briefing heard a warning from HSE officials that any delay in the planning process could put the multi-million Euro project, which will comprise 75 long-stay and 25 short-stay beds, at risk. Aisling Ryan of the HSE told residents that planning hitches “may delay us to the point that the funding leaves”. “That’s really key and it’s really important that people understand that” she …
