Warm welcome for visitors at Shannon barbecue

AROUND 250 people turned out for a welcoming barbecue held at Wolfe Tones on Saturday, with around 100 of them newly arrived Ukrainians. It was the brainchild of the Love Shannon Community Council as the group’s Assistant Secretary Fiona O’Brien Maxwell explained. “We had a member of the group who said it’d be great if we could organise a barbecue and get someone like Wolfe Tones to host it for us. I know the operations manager through work, we supply Wolfe Tones with a lot of stuff so I got onto Paul Hogan there and he said just give me a hand in pulling one or two bits together and we’ll make it work. It grew legs from there, basically it was a welcome barbecue and it was open to the whole town.” All were welcome to attend and Love Shannon gave transport to the club for the new arrivals. “The invitation was extended to the town basically, to whoever …

Opportunities for Shannon, but realism also required, says Henry

In an exclusive interview with the Clare Champion, Conal Henry says he aims to get Shannon Group and the airport out in front of the challenges it will face in future PÁDRAIG Ó Céidigh lasted less than six months before resigning in frustration as chairman of Shannon Group, while his predecessor Rose Hynes faced often scathing criticism during her time in the role. Clearly being chairman of Shannon Group is a role that exposes one to widespread scrutiny. While someone with Conal Henry’s background certainly can’t have been convinced to take up the role for the money, why has the Belfast man accepted the role that Mr Ó Céidigh branded “the most challenging job in Irish aviation”? “First of all, and this sounds crass, but I really mean it, you don’t do things for money, you do things to deliver better outcomes, to effect change that benefits people. “I’m very happy getting involved in a project like Shannon, I find …

Use Shannon to cut Dublin Airport pressure, says Crowe

OVER the last decade Dublin Airport has established an ever-more dominant position in Irish aviation, but at the moment it can’t deal with the crowds of passengers it has. With this in mind, Clare TD Cathal Crowe has called for Shannon Airport to be utilised to alleviate pressure on both inbound and outbound flights. Issues with security are at present leading to significant delays for those using Dublin Airport as a terminus for their travels. Deputy Crowe said acknowledged following a meeting with Dublin Airport Authority’s CEO Dalton Philips and his management that they were “doing everything possible” to recruit additional security staff. Delays in the Garda vetting process and also enhanced screening measures were proving a huge impediment in terms of having staff on the ground, he said. “I have suggested to the management that flights should be diverted to Shannon Airport, where there is plenty of additional capacity. “I believe that Shannon could play a significant role in …

Element 6 matches staff fundraising for Cahercalla and Milford

CHEQUES for €11,773.91 were presented to both Cahercalla and Milford Care Centre recently, the result of fundraising at Element Six. Each year the company along with its staff members choose a charity to support for the coming 12 months. As 2020 approached the company had received many nominations for two charities, Cahercalla Hospice and Mildford. Throughout the course of that year it did hold some events, but given the pandemic it was extremely difficult to raise any substantial sum of money. However there were still fundraising events such as a 6km walk, a coffee morning, an ice cream day and walk in the 12 O’Clock Hills. As the pandemic prevailed, workers in Milford and Cahercalla battled Covid-19, trying their best to protect nursing home residents and patients. The front line workers went far beyond the call of duty to keep them safe, while also providing love, reassurance, company and care. They kept families in regular contact through window visits, video …

Shannon artist creates Ukraine-inspired pieces for charity

SHANNON artist Dominic McNamara is producing a series of art works inspired by the conflict in Ukraine, which will be sold to raise funds for the relief effort. “My intention was to try and create pencil drawings, just capturing not necessarily violence or things like that, but to show Ukraine and the Ukrainian people the way they are at the minute,” he said. “I have one of Freedom Square where you can see rubble, but there’s no violence to be seen as such.” Dominic said that as well as doing pencil drawings, he also does pastel and paints in oils. “I want to get a collection together, but I also want to try and figure out a way to sell them as a collection or to sell them as individual pieces. “I’ve never done this before, so I don’t fully know what I’m doing yet. Unfortunately, I don’t see things there ending any time soon,” he added. He was very …

EMPLOYMENT in a Shannon aviation company will more than treble over a six year-period from this Friday when a new takeover of a neighbouring business takes off. Atlantic Aviation Group (AAG) employs 320 in its existing hangar, 120 in its UK base and will take on about 300 new employees from Lufthansa Technik. The new hangar, which is almost three times the size of the AAG building, can accommodate nine narrow body Ryanair sized aircraft or two wide body and four narrow body aircraft. Back in April 2015, when investor Patrick Jordan bought the company it was employing about 217. Revenue have grown from €15 million to a projected figure of €80 million by the end of the year, with AAG chief executive, Shane O’Neill expecting growth to more than €100 million over the coming years. Barring some unexpected major setback, Mr O’Neill believes overall employment could increase up to 1,000 in a few years. AAG services, maintains and repairs …
