Clare star Diarmuid scores sports scholarship

CLARE hurler Diarmuid Ryan has been awarded an MIC GPA Sports Scholarship for the coming academic year, in recognition of his sporting achievements.  Now in its second year, the MIC GPA Scholarship scheme is a collaboration between Mary Immaculate College (MIC) and the Gaelic Players Association (GPA), and is open to GPA members who have applied for and are successful in securing a place on MIC’s postgraduate programmes in education and the liberal arts. Two scholarships are offered on an annual basis. Limerick camogie player Caoimhe Costelloe has also been awarded a scholarship. Diarmuid Ryan is a first year Professional Master of Education (Primary Teaching) student at MIC. The Cratloe clubman has played inter-county hurling for the Banner since 2017 and is nominated for an All Star award for his performance in Clare’s All-Ireland Championship campaign this year, where they reached the Semi-Final stages. Hank Krabbe Scholarship for Ennis student

Ennis engineering student, Graham Britchfield from Rockmount has been awarded a Hank Krabbe Scholarship at University of Limerick. A fourth year electronic and computer engineering student, Graham will receive a scholarship grant and is also eligible for co-operative education or summer placements at Analog Devices, sponsors of the scholarship. In total, six of UL’s top performing engineering students were awarded Hank Krabbe Scholarships. The top graduating engineering student is also eligible for the Hank Krabbe Medal and an accompanying grant of €5,000. Speaking at the scholarship awards ceremony, Denis Doyle, Vice President and General Manager Limerick Manufacturing, Analog Devices said; “There is a very strong, long-term and successful relationship between Analog Devices and the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department in UL, with many graduates of this course contributing to the success of Analog Devices. “Electronic engineering will continue to be at the heart of our future and with that in mind we have designed the awards to promote the brightest, …

A scholarship on the menu for Orlaith

Orlaith O’Neill from Quin, an employee of McDonald’s in Ennis, has been served up a scholarship to help her with her college studies. Minister for Skills, Research and Innovation, Damien English, TD recently presented McDonald’s employees with their awards at a recent event to mark the McDonald’s Scholarship Programme, an initiative which celebrates the hard work and dedication of McDonald’s employees who are completing college and further education studies. Orlaith, who works in the McDonald’s restaurant in Ennis which is owned and operated by Kieran McDermott, was part of a group of 15 McDonald’s employees from restaurants around the country to receive an award from the McDonald’s Employee Scholarship Programme at a ceremony in Dublin on the last week. McDonald’s Scholarship Programme rewards and encourages employees who want to further their education by awarding each winning employee €1,500 towards their education costs.

Kilmaley medical student wins research scholarship in Cambridge

KILMALEY medical student, Orla Hennessy (pictured) has won a place at the University of Cambridge in the UK as part of the Amgen Scholarship programme. Orla, has just completed her second year of medicine at NUI Galway and will spend the summer as a researcher in Cambridge. One of Europe’s most competitive science scholarship programmes, the Amgen Scholarship offers undergraduate students the opportunity to work in world-class labs across the continent. It is one of the only pan-European undergraduate research programmes open to students across multiple countries and offers the chance to take part in original research at labs at the University of Cambridge, Karolinska Institute or LMU Munich. Orla will work with Professor Martin Bennett in Cambridge’s Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. Her interest in cardiovascular medicine has a family link as both her parents are doctors and her father, Terry is a cardiologist. Orla was only 16 when she sat her Leaving Cert. She knew by …
