Santa set to jet in to Shannon

Short of Christmas Eve itself, Santa’s busiest day in the run up to December 25 is set again for Shannon Airport as the big man jets in for his fifth successive annual Santa Flights on December 2 and 3. Over 2,000 children and their parents or guardians will be carried into the skies to meet Santa 15,000ft above sea level in what has now become the most anticipated event for children across the region aside from the big day itself. The excitement will be palpable and noise deafening as the delight fills the Shannon terminal and skies above for a very special two day treat for children from across the country. To raise even more funds for the Shannon Group charities this year, the airport is putting a new lottery system in place, to replace the €9.99 charge per seat last year. A €1 per seat application fee will apply to enter this year’s lottery and if you win the …

90,000 apply for Santa’s Shannon flights

Santa remains top of the popularity polls with the very young as the great man’s annual Christmas flights at Shannon Airport have attracted 90,000 applications. Shannon Airport has received 45 times the number of requests for the 2,000 seats on the very special services to meet Santa in the sky on December 3 and 4 next, which is an increase of over 55% on the corresponding stage 12 months ago. Applications have been received from each one of the 32 counties and, indeed, from as far afield as the UK. The top ten counties in terms of applications include Clare, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Limerick and Tipperary, accounting for over 60% of the applications. Said Matthew Thomas, CEO of Shannon Group, which operates Shannon Airport: “We are delighted at the incredible demand for these flights but can’t say we’re entirely surprised. Is there really a better draw than Santa! “Airports are a magical place at Christmas as they are where homecomings …

Santa flights on Shannon’s radar

Santa’s busiest annual day in the region – short of December 25th itself – is already on the arrival and departure’s board at Shannon Airport, with confirmation this week that the Santa Flights are set to return next month. Saturday and Sunday, December 3 and 4, have been confirmed by the airport as the day it will put on what has become the biggest children’s treat in the region in the build up to Christmas Day. Now in its fourth year, this year’s Santa flights will see Shannon Airport treat over 2,000 in total, comprising children and guardians, to the magical moment in the sky when they get to meet with the big man himself on board a 737 flight some 15,000ft above sea level. This year again Shannon Airport will donate proceeds from the nominal €9.99 fee to its designated charities, which for 2016 are Galway’s Ábalta Special School for children with autism and complex needs and the Irish …

Santa flying high at Shannon

A very merry Christmas, with an anticipated 15% increase in passenger numbers from 12 months ago, kicked off at Shannon Airport at the weekend, as 2,000 children and parents got to meet Santa in the skies. In an initiative to thank the public for its support over what has been a year of strong growth, as well as raise some much needed funds for two local charities, Shannon Airport, in partnership with Ryanair, made Christmas come early for the excited children as 12 flights took the skies over Saturday and Sunday. Among those getting to savour this special moment were special needs children from the Clare Crusaders Clinic, St Gabriel’s School in Limerick and Mirmear Autism Unit in Tipperary. Demand for the ‘free flights’, the booking fee for which goes to charity, was so high that they booked out in all of 12 minutes, when they went up for grabs two weeks ago. The airport is readying itself for its …

Site crashes as demand for Santa Shannon flights soar

Shannon Airport has suspended online booking for its Santa Flights until at least Monday after the “unprecedented volume of traffic” caused the site to crash earlier today (Friday). A spokesperson for the airport apologised “for the inconvenience caused” adding that they were “working hard to rectify the situation”. Last year was the first year of the Santa Flights initiative which offers children and families the chance to fly from the airport with Santa transferring from his sleigh to board the aircraft some 15,000ft above sea-level during the 40 minute journeys. Booking opened at 2pm on Friday but many parents were left disappointed as demand caused the booking system to crash. Initial problems on the Shannon Airport website resulted in an announcement on the its Facebook page that bookings could be made instead on the Shannon Heritage site. There were then technical difficulties with this system. Hundreds of people took to Facebook to voice their dissatisfaction. Some said they couldn’t access …
